I don't care for his standup, but i LOVED Mind of Mencia. "Ludacris, you say your necklace feels like a midget? Well my necklace really IS a midget!" Man, I thought your Alex Riley love was bad. I'm not a hopeless Mark for Carlos Mencia, just thought Mind of Mencia was a pretty damn good sketch comedy show

The guy was hot for about a year, then got exposed as a blatant joke thief, then I haven't really heard from him since. You really answered your own question to be honest. Although it didn't stop Denis Leary's career... That's because there's no cure for cancer.

Well basically he lost some weight and he tried a come back several years ago (he was in several movies and a stand up special), but none of it took. I think it's just that he has the taint of being a joke thief and none of his material was particularly innovated. He's basically in that Jeff Dunham and Larry "The Cable Guy" level. They do amazing with their core audiences, but they're hardly groundbreakers like a Louie CK, Dave Chapelle, or Jerry Seinfeld. Not really good to compare him to Larry the Cable Guy. He actually sells out arenas outside of what you would expect to be his target market. And last I knew, Dunham was one of the highest grossing acts in the world. His international numbers are insane.

Edge was on Mind of Mencia. That's the saddest thing of all. They couldn't even get his name right, as he was called "The Edge". The Edge is Bono's partner from U2... Edge was the pro wrestler. Personally, I thought his comedy really sucked on Mind of Mencia, as it focused around how stupid (well, he'd use another word) people were, which he called "Dee Dee Dees". There wasn't a whole lot there in the content department, as bits that could have been recurring skits were only one-time segments. Yeah, he was the one guy who capitalized on Chappelle's breakdown.

Doesn't he make a lot of jokes referring to himself as Mexican, even though he's like from Honduras, or something?

Oh god. I had somehow forgotten the plague on society that was "Dee Dee Dee".

Jeff and Larry the cable guy are very popular. People seem to forget Mencia was also very popular with the Hispanic audience as well. My argument was that any of these people succeeded by identifying an underserved niche, recognized its buying power, and meets it's needs on a consistent basis. I'm not arguing their failures... far from it. I'm arguing they'll never be that critical darling that a Louie CK or Jerry Seinfeld are. Those guys are ground breakers. That's not what Larry the Cable Guy is, but he doesn't need to be. He has his money.

I remember a story Patton Oswalt told on Conan where he had a gig after a couple of Latino comedians and Mencia was MC or something that night and when he introduced him to the largely Hispanic crowd he yelled "Now wait, give him a chance." He seemed like a good guy.

He was playing at a local Funnybone about a month ago. I got a text to message from them saying I won free tickets, I just had to pay the $3 cover charge.
I didn't go.
