The more I think about it, the more I think it could be compelling to see Spud CHASE the belt, but not actually win it. An underdog story about the least likely contender giving the dominant champion a run for his money. But it woukd probably end up compared to Daniel Bryan.

Why not? EC III works his way into the title scene, hires the BDC to watch his back (promising to use his family stroke to "look after them" once he has the belt. Spud manages to work the match into a triple threat, Roode, Angle and the faces take out the clan, EC III uses his finisher to win, but Spud somehow steals the pin and gets the belt. Run for a couple of months with the faces helping keep the belt on Spud, then down the line, Aries cashes in his briefcase for the squash. I could happily buy into that

If Mikey Whipwreck can win the ECW title then if done well why the hell not? Well, Mikey Whipwreck was 5'9 and at least 170-180 pounds. Not a huge guy but he would dwarf Spud. If Spud were 5'7-5'8 and around the 160-170 mark I'd say sure but the dude is 5'4 140 pounds and is a comedy character. It would murder the belt.

Honestly, would it murder the belt anymore than Magnus' title reign did? That was a complete disaster. With the proper booking, underdog title reigns can really work and I liked how they treated EY when he won it, so I have some faith that they know how to make an underdog work.
