Honestly, would this be a bad idea?
He's the best talent in the company - entertaining and easy to get behind. I love Lashley, Roode, MVP, but I don't need to see a revolving door of the three feuding for the title all year; that'll get boring, very quickly.
Now that Spud has the X-Division title shot, I wouldn't be surprised if he won the title and cashed it in at Destination X for a World Title match and actually pulled off the upset against, say, MVP. Even if the Reign is short (no pun intended) it could provide a very entertaining moment and regain some interest in their product. He's obviously a company man and one of the few people who seems legitimately excited to be a part of the group; why not reward him for it?

Spud is 5'4 and 130 pounds. The smallest mainstream wrestler ever (Not including midgets) and is a comedy character. Way too small and would make the TNA Title mean even less.

I'd agree with that ... if it wasn't the TNA title. It's hardly anything that's highly regarded in the wrestling world. May as well make the people happy and give the title to someone they like and can get behind.

I get that the TNA Title might not be all that "prestigious", but why should they give their world title to a joke character? You're basically suggesting that TNA continue their erratic booking for the sake of "might as well do it because that's what everyone expects".

They already gave the title to a joke character last year: EY
So, I wouldn't put it past them one bit to do it again and when Spud and EC3 is the most entertaining feud in your promotion, why not make it the top program by adding the World Title to the mix? I am likely not alone in thinking EC3 winning the title would be freaking great, and him beating Spud for it would be a another way for them to continue their feud.

I am likely not alone in thinking EC3 winning the title would be freaking great, and him beating Spud for it would be a another way for them to continue their feud. The difference is that EY has actually shown bursts of being a serious wrestler over the years, and has won multiple titles in TNA "back when it was good". Spud is a talented guy, sure, but to the mainstream audience, he's a former "non wrestler" who "just started" wrestling. EC3 winning the title would be great. But winning it from Spud of all people won't make him look great. EC3 is one of the few things TNA has done RIGHT. TNA took a performer who didn't amount to anything in WWE and made him a STAR. If TNA wants to make EC3 a anything resembling a top player in the wrestling world, he can't win his first World Title by beating a joke character.

EC3 is a heel - and a cowardly one at that - he shouldn't "look great" - he should beat the likes of Spud and claim it as a huge victory when indeed he just beat up a man much smaller than him.
I can see why Spud may not be the best idea for a champion, but I think they could create a good story around it and Spud is a company man, I am sure he wouldn't mind promoting them at any chance he could unlike Hogan, who seemed afraid to mention the company any-time he had an interview.
I wouldn't hate it if he had a shot for the title and he lost, maybe thanks to inference from EC3 and that's the way they continue the feud between the two. I think there's a lot of potential for Spud, and I hope they don't squander it with him.

They put the belt on EY and it's up there with the likes of Sabin and Magnus as the worst national company title reigns ever. Right up there with the likes of David Arquette and Vince Russo.
I still remember Slammiversary last year where Eric Young came out to almost zero reaction. He retained the title and a middle aged woman at ringside summed it up by shrugging her shoulders and politely clapping.

I think Spud would actually be a better choice than EY was last year. Mind you, neither of them would be good choices, and neither of them have/had any business being the World champion at this point in their careers, but they could weave an interesting narrative out of Spud winning the title.
Young has went from serious to comedy and back so many times that it really didn't matter which side of the fence he happened to be on at that time. At the very least, Spud's more of a clean slate than Young was a year ago. You could tell a more convincing story of Spud rising from being the ass-kissing yes man in a gaudy suit, to being the man who stood up to his boss, and then along the way, coming to the realization that he had the heart and talent of a champion the whole time.
If anything else, it's unlikely that WWE would happen to do anything resembling a Rockstar Spud push, so for that, it's automatically better than TNA photocopying the Daniel Bryan story and telling three months of TV in one night.

If we're gonna put the belt on a joke character I'd rather they put it on Crazzy Steve.
That at least sounds like it would be a fun trainwreck.

Spud as X-Division or Tag Champ? Sure.
World Heavyweight Champ? No way. I like him a lot, but no.

Spud is going to do fine as X-Division champ but World champ no. Perception changes over time but let's see him go out there and win the X title and what he does against the competition with hopefully very little comedy spots.

Why not? A much better underdog story than EY. Yeah, he's seriously undersized but so was Mysterio when he made his main event climb. Tell the right story, people will buy into it. ECW managed to get Spike Dudley over as a Giant Killer. It wasn't out of the realm of possibility of him beating Mike Awesome and becoming ECW World champion due to his history of beating folks who were 3 times his size.

Spud as world champ-no, that I really can't see. BUT-I could see Spud getting a title shot against a heel champ and giving a surprisingly strong challenge. Could work as a way toelevate him and perhaps move him away from the comedy character.

With time, I'd say why not. Of course this is TNA so they'd probably rush it, but I'd play out the EC3/Spud feud a little longer, then have Spud have a couple of runs with the X-Division title, then if not this year, next where he uses Option C and gives up the X-Division title to challenge Ethan for the TNA title and, if he's still undefeated, take that from him too.
If TNA lasts to next year, anyway.

Spud as world champ can't be any worse than some of the past champs they've had. He's entertaining and talented and his reign wouldn't need to be that long.
It's unfortunate that TNA seems to really suck at pushing guys who didn't originally come from elsewhere in the title scene lately.

If this was any other company in the world, I'd say no.
BUT. It's the TNA World title. It means less than nothing. f*** it, throw on Spud. Is it really gonna do any more damage to the title than Paper Champion Magnus or Eric Young?
