...more famous than the main eventers from today?
Generally I mean, as in more non fans might know Virgil or Brooklyn Brawler than Randy Orton. I hear this argument sometimes but I am kind of on the fence tbh...

On the whole, no I don't think so. I'm sure people could pick out isolated cases on both sides of the equation though to make an argument either way.

Generally, yeah. I think it's a shame that midcard has become a dirty word. Some people have their level at midcard. Nothing wrong with that. Mr Perfect was "only" a midcard guy. They never really pushed him to the main event because they didn't need to. So many potentially great midcarders are over pushed and become piss-weak main eventers and they never recover from it.

The sad part is that a lot of those guys are probably more valued by the company as "piss-weak main eventers" than as great mid carders. Nothing to do with their talent or lack of, but I think that if guys like Miz and Swagger never had their WWE/World Title runs, then they'd be at Zack Ryder level or they'd have been future endeavored by now.

No. I don't think Val Venis, for example, is more famous than John Cena.

I don't think this is exactly true.
For instance, John Cena is far more famous than Virgil ever has been, though part of that is that he has media appearances outside of wrestling, so if someone didn't know him from wrestling, they might know him from commercials, his guest appearances on shows, talk shows, hell, even something like one of those shitty Fred movies.
Orton doesn't escape that bubble nearly as often.

I'd say the top echelon of today's uppercard, the Ortons, the Cenas, the Bryans, etc. are more well known than the Virgils or the Val Venises of the past.
However, when you go down a bit to the guys who are one step below, or haven't been at the top all that long, like The Shield guys or Dolph Ziggler, you could make a case that guys like Junkyard Dog or Shane McMahon may perhaps be more well-known.

If we can count Jake the Snake as a midcarder I would say he trumps everyone today but Cena.

Um, yes. People might need a picture to remind them, but that's better than all the people today they've never heard of or seen.

I would guess more people know who Koko B Ware or Val Venis are than Randy Orton or Daniel Bryan. They might need reminded but they'll remember the bird guy or the porn star.
It's simple math, more people were watching then, plus the characters were more colorful and memorable.
