WCW Mayhem
Sunday November 21st, 1999
From the Air Canada Center in Toronto, Ontario
Commentators: Tony Schivonte and Bobby "the Brain" Heenan
A promo detailing how Sting was stripped of the WCW world Heavyweight title and the tournament that ensued to crown a new champion. Tonight the new champion is crowned. The final four are Chris Benoit, Sting, Jeff Jarrett and Bret Hart.
There are twelve matches on this card. That's a lot for three hours.
Semi-Final Match in the Tournament to Crown a New WCW World Heavyweight Champion
Jeff Jarrett vs. Chris Benoit
This was a really good match. It could've gone on longer but they still had eleven matches to go. Benoit got a nasty eye injury towards the end. Then those idiots Creative Control and Dustin Runnels come out.
Winner: Chris Benoit (moves on to the finals later tonight)
Mike Teney backstage with Disco Inferno. He's defending his Cruiserweight title later tonight. Then an angry Jeff Jarrett attacks him.
For the WCW Cruiserweight Championship and 25000
Evan Karagias w/Madusa vs. Disco Inferno (champion) w/Tony Marinara
I don't know who Tony Marinara was but he joined the commentary team for this match and killed it. What else...? Madusa had some huge breasts.
Winner: Evan Karagias (new WCW Cruiserweight champion)
Bret Hart backstage...WALKING!
Jeff Jarrett backstage complaining to the Powers that Be. "Whoever it is" says (in a thick New York accent) that Jeff has to prove himself tonight.
Norman Smiley backstage with Mean Gene Okerlund. He has a match for the WCW Hardcore Championship tonight.
For the WCW Hardcore Championship
Brian Knobbs w/Jimmy Hart vs. Screamin' Norman Smiley
I loved Norman. Whether he was Wiggling or Screaming. He took quite the beating in this match. This was as good as any Hardcore match from WCW or the WWF but it was entertaining. Because of Norman.
Winner: Norman Smiley
Mike Teney backstage with the Revolution (Shane Douglas, Perry Saturn, Dean Malenko and Asya). Perry was actually pretty good in this segment in his off the wall way. I never knew he played a wacko in WCW too.
Gene Okerlund backstage with the Filthy Animals (Konnan, Eddie Guererro, Billy Kidman and Torrie Wilson).
Disco Inferno is backstage apologizing to Tony Marinara for hitting him with a chair earlier. Tony says tomorrow on Nitro he's "bringing the boys".
Jeff Jarrett backstage WALKING and TALKING. He has something to prove.
Six Person Elimination Match
The Revolution (Perry Saturn, Dean Malenko and Asya) w/Shane Douglas vs. the Filthy Animals (Eddie Guererro, Billy Kidman and Torrie Wilson) w/Konnan
What's bigger than Chyna? ASYA! This could have been a great match if they subbed Shane Douglas and Konnan for Asya and Torrie. Instead it was barely given fifteen minutes.
Winner: Perry Saturn
Jeff Jarrett and Creative Control are backstage attacking Buff Bagwell.
Retirement Match
Curt Hennig vs. Buff Bagwell
Jeff Jarrett and Creative Control came out and attacked Curt Hennig at first. Then Buff came in for the save. Then the match happened. It was okay. There was zero heat.
Winner: Buff Bagwell
Mike Teney is backstage with Sting.
Semi-Final Match in the Tournament
Bret "the Hitman" Hart vs. Sting
I've always had a hard time watching Bret Hart in WCW and I've always had a hard time watching Sting as a heel. This is another match that should’ve been given much more time. I'm noticing that a lot with this show. Lex Lugar runs down to the ring and gets Sting disqualified. But he brings Miss Elizabeth with him, so all is well. Bret demands the match continues and within two minutes...
Winner: Bret Hart (moves to the finals later tonight against Chris Benoit)
Mean Gene Okerlund backstage with Chris Benoit.
Mike Teney backstage with Lex Lugar and Miss Elizabeth. Lex says he's too hurt to wrestle Meng tonight. I can't say I blame him.
Chain Match
Vampiro and Jerry Only vs. Berlyn and the Wall
Dr. Death Steve Williams and Oklahoma come out to join the commentary team and ruin my chances of enjoying this match before it even gets started. It did suck though.
Winners: Vampiro and Jerry Only
Mike Teney backstage with Scott Hall.
Curt Hennig leaving the arena for the last time.
Kimberly backstage WALKING WITH HUGE FAKE BOOBS!
"The Total Package" Lex Lugar w/Miss Elizabeth vs. Meng
As much as I love Liz she totally blew her cue at the end of this forgettable match. Whatever she was supposed to spray in Mengs face but sprayed in Lex's face came out of her bra. Ah yeah.
Winner: Meng
Mean Gene Okerlund backstage with Bret Hart. An angry Lex Lugar walks by looking for Liz.
David Flair is backstage getting ready for his match against Kimberly...okay. For me to get ready for Kimberly I'd have to jerk off three or four times so when the actual deed did come to happen I wouldn't embarrass myself.
Open Challenge for the WCW United States and Television Championships
Scott Hall (champion) vs. Booker T.
I think Scott Hall was pretty f***ed up during this match. It was going pretty fine until those idiots Jeff Jarrett and Creative Control came out and cost Booker the match.
Winner: Scott Hall
After the match Jarrett and Creative Control attack Booker. The lights go out...a clock strikes...the light goes back on...and some lady is standing in the ring and takes the three baddies out.
Lex Lugar is backstage looking for Elizabeth.
Promo for the debacle that's gone on between Kimberly Page and David Flair. David Flair sucked so much.
David Flair vs. Kimberly and her breasts w/o a bra
I don't know if David was supposed to no-sell during this match because he was supposed to be a zombie or if he just couldn't sell. This sucked. Kanyon and Diamond Dallas Page came our and saved us all. Then Arn Anderson came out for the save for David Flair. But David attacked him too.
Winner: not a soul
Promo for Goldberg verses Sid Vicious.
Mike Teney backstage with Sid Vicious in a classic nonsensical promo. Seeing this was worth watching the last two hours.
I Quit Match
Sid Vicious vs. Goldberg
Ah Toronto, booing Goldberg. I saw this match a little over a year ago on the Goldberg home video the WWE released. It wasn't worth watching again. Their match at Halloween Havoc was way better.
Winner of the Worlds Shortest I Quit Match: Goldberg
Mean Gene Okerlund with Lex Lugar. He's mad at Liz.
For the WCW World Heavyweight Championship
Chris Benoit vs. Bret "the Hitman" Hart
I think the crowd had realized that they had come to the end of a terrible show and were totally out of this match. Even the Outsiders and Goldberg couldn’t bring them back in to it. This match should have been a five star match for all-time. Instead the last half was split between a backstage brawl between the Outsiders and Goldberg. Shame.
Winner: Bret "the Hitman" Hart (new WCW World Heavyweight Champion)
______________________________________________________________________________
It was funny watching three WCW pay per views over the last week separated by only a couple of years (Bash at the Beach 1996, Road Wild 1998 and this in 1999) and seeing how quickly WCW took off and came down. But watching this show and how poorly it came across it was no wonder why.
The problem with this pay per view (and WCW of the era) was that they just didn’t give anything any time. There were what, twelve matches. Varying quality. But none given more then ten minutes. They could have cut this card in half, gotten rid of a few of the crappier matches, doubled the time given to everything left, added a few matches with some of the guys they DIDN'T have on this pay per view (Nash? DDP? Hogan? Flair? The Maestro? Kwee-Wee?) and had two really good pay per views.
The crowd was pretty marktastic. They were in to parts of the show but chanted "boring" a lot too. It was your typical late-1990's crowd. I've never heard thirteen thousand people quitter than they were during the main event. You have to wonder if it was a bad crowd or a crowd at a dying days WCW show? The only times they popped during matches was when girls in the crowd were taking their tops off, or fights or something. But as someone reminded me; Toronto cheered Cena.
