www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwZGZOGr_yoJust saw this match in it's entirety, and it's a shame it's often lost in the awfulness of WCW in 99-00. It's got big names, the crowd is into it, it's got big moments left and right, I find it hard to not like. Anyone else have thoughts on this match?

I remember this pretty well since I watched it 3 times. When I watched Nitro, on the syndication recap show WCW Worldwide and on Telemundo. The Hogan/Sting feud followed this with Hogan teaming with Flair and Bret against Sting, Luger and DDP.

When and why did Hogan turn face? Hogan came back form injury the night after Bash at the Beach. He was still Hollywood, wearing the red, black, and white nWo colors, but be worked as a babyface to defeat Savage for the world title. Nash helped Hogan win, then challenged Hogan for the belt, saying it was the second time he handed Hogan that belt. Hogan accepted and entered into program with Nash turning heel. Babyface Hollywood appeared for a couple weeks, then they did a thi backstage with Hogan's son asking him to wear the outfit that he brought him. Hogan came out later in the red and yellow, completing the full return to Hulk-a-Mania.

Yeah, but that was a year later. He stayed red and yellow until Russo came in and sent him home. Once Russo was relieved of his duties, red and yellow Hogan came back. When the Russo and Bischoff regime kicked off in April 2000, Hogan transitioned into Terry "Hulk Hogan" Bollea and wrestled in street clothes. Leading into his challenge of world champion Jeff Jarrett at Bash at the Beach 2000, Hogan went back to being Hollywoof Hogan.

At some point between Russo eras, Hogan returned as the Hulkster, but they seemed to play off Hollywood as a more dangerous, twisted, aggressive version of Hogan. Almost in a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde type deal.

No one's going to mention Heenan marking out for Hogan?

It's one of the last big moments for WCW, for me. Even at the time I wasn't exactly Hogan's biggest fan, due to overexposure, but this was a hell of a way to return and the crowd makes that match more special.
God, Rick Steiner was such garbage by this point, though. Just terrible and stunk out the joint for years. WCW's main event scene in '99 was pretty much a horror show anyway in terms of workrate, but Rick was pushed way beyond what he was physically capable of.

They had some pretty good tag matches like this in '99 by mixing and matching guys like Hogan, Sid, Sting, Goldberg, Nash, etc.
Also, when Hogan went back to the red & yellow he changed his catch phrase to "I'm gonna say my prayers, take my vitamins, and kick your ass!" It was pretty lame but in Hogan's mind it made Hulkamania edgy.

Yeah, I remember during that time that Jarrett or whomever got Horace to turn on Hulk, and on one Nitro or Thunder they asked him if he'd have a match with his nephew; Hogan said something like "Hulk Hogan will not fight Horace", which led to him walking out in black and white and saying "but I didn't say a damn thing about Hollywood".
Always liked the idea of wrestlers using their various gimmicks as alternate personalities, to suit whatever circumstance they're in.

I like multiple personality disorder Hogan in 2000. Red/Yellow when justice needed to done, Black/White when the matter required more harmful tactics, and being Terry Bollea when it was personal.

He could also be Thunderlips and demand Rocky show up. They could get Stallone in the early 2000s. That would be there way of competing with WWF giving the Box Office Championship to Arnold.

This was such a weird period, even for late WCW. In the span of about 6 months (March through September 99) a bunch of people turned face (Hogan, Nash, Bagwell, Bischoff,) turned heel (Flair, Piper, Sting, Rick Steiner, Nash, DDP), Savage and Sid returned, the nWo basically faded away, Curt Hennig suddenly became a redneck, Dennis Rodman was inexplicably put into a singles match, and a young vs old storyline appeared out of nowhere.
And this is all before Russo showed up mind you.

I mean, the main event angle of the Great American Bash revolved around Nash and Savage pouring poop on each other.

99 was the year I got into WCW, basically right as Macho returned. My first PPV was Uncensored 99 with Hogan vs Flair. I remember this stuff fondly.
