Spartacus. Best season actually, but the whole series is great.
Also Wilfred.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 1. It has somewhat of a different feel than the rest of the series, due to the absence of Danny DeVito, but is still fantastic.

Almost every show from HBO. Seriously every HBO show I liked had a really strong first season. The weird thing is the last season is almost always the worst and it's not because of the ending or any departures since their isn't lots of departures in HBO Shows since HBO actors are pretty loyal and usually only leave if they are about to be killed off.
But for two shows that need to be listed and haven't been listed yet:
-Silicon Valley -Chuck

While it was not bad, too me it does not seem as good as the later seasons. It is extreamly rough and it seems a little more hit and miss than it was later.

Rough for sure, but I think only one episode (Waiting for God) doesn't really hold up, and overall the season is strong. I don't think we got a bad season until 8.

Instead of a show that had a good first season and built on it, Prison Break ended up having a great first season, tripped up in the second and then proceeded to fall off the cliff and plummet further and further as the show went on. The problem there was that the entire premise of the show was to break Lincoln out of prison before his execution date, which didn't even take the whole first season to accomplish. On a show called "Prison Break", what story could you have that would measure up to breaking out of prison?

I thought the first season of Rescue Me was probably the best, other seasons started to feel more disjointed, more drama than comedy, centered too much on Denis Leary, even if he was the whole reason I watched the show they had a cast with stories you started to care about. I think it was probably the best season.

Friends was really strong out of the gate. The birth of Ross's kid had some really great jokes.

Home Movies. I regularly break out the "He's gonna come after your moms" rant from Brendon to one mate of mine whenever he's around his girl. The squiggle vision really made it hard for me, but yeah. The writing and acting was so great in S1. I remember watching it on the CW or WB or whatever and was so glad when AS picked it up.

I think the first season was the best of the series. Not that the others were in any way bad but they did tend to repeat the show's formula of putting Kenny in a situation and chronicling his rise and almost fall from grace. Also, things were a bit more realistic and grounded, and I liked the relationship between Powers and his brother and his brother's family.

That and Dee was the voice of reason during that season. Going to throw this out there; Glee. Once upon a time, the show was tongue-in-cheek about shows being preachy with it's morals and very self-aware.
