"A Question of Empathy; Many studies have investigated whether or not there is a link between video games and violence, but few have looked at the bigger picture. What is the correlation between video games and empathy? Since games put us, as players, in the role of characters who are not ourselves, asking us to understand their situation and the problems that they face, they have the potential to teach us about how to empathize with others. While many gamers have anecdotal evidence about games that made them feel a character's pain, there's a disappointing lack of formal studies into that side of the question."

There's a lot to be said about genre in this, I think, as well as the age and mental maturity/development of those partaking in certain games. I won't claim to have seen studies on it or know what sorts of conclusions to draw, as my work in the social sciences are mostly in history with just some political science and a dab of sociology, but the overall point is a sound one: you cannot hold all video games in the same regard when it comes to these things, just as you would not do that with all books, all movies, all TV shows, etc.

I used to have these guys bookmarked - mainly after James Portnoys appearance on the Co-Optional Podcast. But after they went for total biscuit with no research, no due diligence and based on 'I heard what I heard' even after TB went over and explained their accusations point by point and got no reply and no apology I quickly binned my link to their site.

If someone isn't all there, then something is going to eventually set off the trigger, video games or not.

Maybe it's just me but I can never get super emotional during video games. This idea of "stepping into" characters we play as is weird to me because it's never been even remotely a realistic practice. My first game had me jumping on turtles and breaking blocks and that's always been the mindset I've carried into other games - I'm having fun and f*** reality.
