Yeah I know like a zillion threads exist on this and how his gimmick sucked and he was a failed attempt to recreate Hulk Hogan and how he brought nothing to the table, etc.
But, did anyone else notice how uncomfortable Lex always looked in the ring during his "Made in the USA" run? Not that Lex was ever exactly Bret Hart in the first place (FACT), but compare him to how he looked just a year or two before in WCW. Sometimes in the WWF ring he looks like he doesn't know where he is or what to do next, so he just fills the gaps with punching... punching... more punching. He's constantly giving the sign for the Torture Rack, even before he started using the "Rebel Rack" in WWF, and I don't think he even signed for it that much in WCW when that was his finisher.
I attribute it to the fact that Lex wasn't nearly as comfortable in the role of the babyface. What he wanted to do was walk out grinning like a douche and jiggle his pectorals, but Vince wanted him to be a Ken doll instead.
Discuss or not. I don't even care.

I will give him and Yokozuna credit, their main event at SummerSlam '93 is woefully underrated. Honestly a great match that is only spoiled by the ending.

The motorcycle accident that gave him the steel plate in his forearm really killed his ability. He was never going to be a technical wizard, but he was just so limited coming back from that.
He had been a face before in WCW, so it wasn't completely alien territory. They just shouldn't have tried to turn him into Hogan.

One thing that always confused me..why was his steel forearm considered illegal as a heel so he had to wear padding...yet was allowed to use it as a face. His summerslam match with yoko he had it covered but after that just started hitting people with it without any mention of it having a steel plate in.

Luger could be a very effective babyface, but certainly not as an All American baby kisser. In the NWA he was effective as a guy wanting revenge on the Horsemen, or sticking up for an injured Sting a few years later, etc. He's solid at being an interpersonal sort of face, but making him the symbol of everything right and virtuous about America....not so much.
I've been watching some of WCW's 1997 era PPVs and shows and Luger's work at that point is seriously underrated. While Sting was sulking in the rafters for an entire year, Luger was essentially the top babyface in the company from most of the Spring Stampede to Road Wild time period (Piper was kind of the top face from Starrcade 1996 until SuperBrawl VII). WCW's top tier babyfaces of that era were nowhere near as poorly booked as history would have you believe.

Okay, I wonder this. How over was he as a hell when he was The Narcissist? Pretty over. Or at the very least, he had a legitimacy and a mystique that people bought.

His summerslam match with yoko he had it covered but after that just started hitting people with it without any mention of it having a steel plate in. Selective booking. Same reason why Paul Orndorff was a hated heel for using the piledriver but beloved when turned face. Lex is a natural heel. But Vince wanted to re-created the All American babyface main eventer like Hogan and draped him in the American flag. Luger wasn't feeling it and it showed. Also didn't help that those even cheesy for the early 90's Lex Express videos made him less bad ass and more pussified. Hulkster may done cheesy videos but his over the top showmanship and charisma carried those segments.

One of the most botched booking choices ever... Yeah, this was really bad. I watched it for the first time recently and was shocked at how they handled it. They'd built Luger up for weeks with the slam, Lex Express, etc. Then you have him win via count-out? Not only that, you have confetti and him lifted up onto the Steiner's shoulders for said count-out? It was just really stupid booking and did nothing to help Luger. I'd venture so far as to say that it completely ruined him in the WWF from that point until the end of his time there.

One thing that kinda went unnoticed, is when Mr. Perfect claims he's not to blame for Luger not winning, he says he was being "biased" the whole time. Next to saying The Narcissist wrong, he revealed his "true intentions" with that botched statement. Regarding to him being heel, it worked for that character because he was the type of douche that feels he was better than everybody because he had the better body. Like someone said, had it not been for the motorcycle accident, he would have worked more. Okay, not that he was the best based on what you see, but he would at least try and have done more. It would have made for botchtastic classics for the forum.

His turn was interesting, but it seemed to come out of nowhere. He shows up by helicopter and slams Yoko. They have a match at Summer Slam and he wins by count-out. All of the faces come out to congratulate him. It didn't make any sense. It was such a stupid ending. Then they have the Survivor Series match which then bumps Luger out and puts The Undertaker in as the one to face Yoko.
I think a babyface Luger could have worked, just not the All-American Lex Luger. It didn't work at all. I mean they could have brought The Patriot in for that.

I absolutely love the booking and crowd reaction when he's up against team nWo 4-1 at Spring Stampede and racks Savage, eliminates Nash, racks Hall, and suddenly has Hogan all to himself. Just a great moment.
