"The Jimquisition has never had a proper episode on game length, because it's old and goes around in circles. However, we're also plugged into the cultural zeitgeist here, because we like saying zeitgeist, so let's dress this mutton as lamb and get to it, son!"

Interestingly this is another thing that Nintendo of all companies is doing rather right(this is on top of them doing DLC the right way). Both Captain Toad and the new Wii U Kirby game, which are on the shorter side of games, btw, are/were $40 at launch. So Nintendo is doing that flexible level of pricing Jim talked about wanting to see from big name studios.

All I know is that Super Metroid is probably the best game I ever played and the "best" ending of the game requires you to complete it in under 2 hours.

Game length is a debate?

Yes, yes it is. I've routinely seen people take a game to town if it has a full retail price of $60 at launch, but its length is below 10 hours. Doesn't matter how good the game actually is, if it is too short(or at least is too short and lacks a fully fleshed out multiplayer suite), a lot of people will skip out on it. As Jim points out, a lot of gamers just don't have the cash to toss out for any and all games they want, so they tend to go with the games that have longer play times.

IMO if you're talking a story driven action adventure/RPG, I say 15-20. If you have 40 hours, that's SICK!, but you don't quit padding.

A lot of these gamers also have no idea how expensive games were back in the 8 and 16-bit days, even without adjusting for inflation. and they were on average pretty short. Not to mention how much they were adjusting for inflation. Then again, it's a lot easier to be angry about cost of games versus game length when you're footing the bill instead of mom and dad.

They could remove quite a bit of the MMO padding that DA:I has and replace it with a smaller selection of quests that had more meaning and I would enjoy the game a bit more.

And there is also the part that the old games made you be good at them. Nowadays everybody needs to win the game as the rule. Thus, the old games might have been very short, but when you got them you may have only finished them like a month or so after you got them (if you're good) and nowadays you have games costing full price in which you've seen and played everything within a day.

Yeah, 70-odd quid for Streetfighter 2 for the SNES, ouch.
