So I listened to AOW with BL and it was a great interview. So I was curious and looked up his matches on the network and watched a few of his matches in early to mid 90s. In 93(maybe 94?) he beats sparkplug holly and I noticed he has Flairs music. I realize he was "nature boy" and had blonde hair but did they really intend for him to take his spot or be a main eventer?
He also has a squash match in 95 with Ahmed Johnson

Buddy was hired mainly because WWF at the time didn't have money for big names and needed solid hands to fill the card. He wasn't meant as a replacement Flair or a potential main eventer.

Was it Flair's WWF music or Also sprach Zarathustra? I knew that he was around for a short time, but I'm shocked that he had entrance music at all, let alone beating Bob Holly.

It was Ric's WWF theme. Bob Holly at the time was at the Zack Ryder level so him beating him wasn't a big stretch.

He was Dean Douglas' "grad student" for a while. Since he was used mostly as a jobber, I figured it was a way they could take a jab at Flair, who was one of WCW's biggest stars at the time.

Wasn't Cornette instrumental in getting Buddy the shots/brief runs? I seem to recall him having one match on Raw at some point in '97/98 as well.

I think they missed the boat with Landell. There were too many wrestlers on the roster in the 90's so it was easy for him to get lost in the mix.

He had the tools, but I think because he was using the nickname Nature Boy that he would be overshadowed by Flair.

According to cagematch.net Landel wrestled a match a piece for the WWF in 1997 and 1998, but they were not televised. He did however wrestle two TV matches in 1999 losing to The Godfather and HHH on separate occasions.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfCpjgcnLfsThis promo is so great, is sad to see buddy landell never reaching his full potential, I think that his moniker of nature boy limited him way too much

I can assure you that when he was in WWE there were no plans for him to possibly be a main eventer. He was there during the lean years and you would often see wrestlers who worked the Tennessee territories showing up in WWE as WWE had a working relationship with USWA and Jim Cornette had some influence back then after Smokey Mountain folded.
He had some chances to be a main eventer in the 1980s at various times, especially in a feuds with Ric Flair. Supposedly, there was at one time a plan to have him win the NWA World Heavyweight Championship from Flair. I think Buddy Landel's own actions, demeanor, and possibly demons all kept him really making his mark in wrestling.

Yeah, he joined the WWF in 1995 as a card filler. '95 is also the year you're looking for regarding the match with Bob Holly.
He only made a few appearances before leaving again.

If you haven't heard him on Colt Cabana's podcast, I highly recommend it. He's a classic old school wrestler in the greatest and most hilarious way.

I remember him making an appearance on an old episode of Shotgun during the Attitude Era as one-half of a jobber tag team. Vince Russo was doing commentary and actually had a pretty hilarious line saying "Buddy Landell looks in pretty good shape considering I thought he was dead".

How dare he steal the name of the original and only nature boy Ric Flair?
