As early as the Summer when the Shield broke up, and Evolution did as well, Triple H was paired off in many different directions.
In August, the first rumor was Roman Reigns at Summerslam, then push to perhaps Wrestlemania.
Dean Ambrose was feuding with the authority early in September and many thought he would be the man at Wrestlemania.
Then there was the rumor of Dave wanting to have one last run and a farewell match against HHH.
By late fall, we had rumors of both Ziggler, due to winning Survivor Series and even Ryback as potential candidates.
Then came Sting, and that's where we are heading.
So of all those men potentially available to face HHH, would would be the best guy for business for HHH to put over and give them a Wrestlemania rub?

Ziggler. Actually follow up on Survivor Series from last year. It'd really help the guy big time. Nobody has ever wanted to see Sting vs. Triple H, and it's the ego of the competitor Triple H, not the more humble booker, that make him jump the gun to want to face the guy so he could be the first.

I agree with Ziggler. Him winning would be the rub he needs. Whether they followed through on that would be a different story.
I can see how HHH could be viewed as an ego-maniac here, but I also think this is him taking one for the team. He's a good worker, he can carry Sting to a good match, knows psychology, can sell, and will make Sting look as good as he possibly can. I think HHH can take the loss, setting Sting up for a stronger competitor for Taker in a year (if they still go that route) rather than having Sting come in and look weak against Undertaker by taking a loss in his first match. Plus Sting has always been "for the greater good" and him targeting HHH makes sense from a moral perspective.

In my perfect Mania 31 card, he didn't make the cut.

Batista. I think with Batista's new found movie star popularity, the match would have been big or at least somewhat big from a business standpoint. Also, they have a lot of history together, so why not have one final match at Mania. I still think Sting should have wrestled Taker. But the problem is they would have had to bring in Sting earlier for that to happen so he wouldn't lose in his first WWE match since I'd be surprised if they have Taker lose 2 WrestleManias in a row.

No one on the everyday roster gets any sort of rub beating HHH. HHH is in the same role as The Undertaker as a special attraction.

The only person I've actually seen him be rumored against at any point not named Sting was Rock.

I think HHH should only compete in matches that people are clamouring for. Am I therefore saying he should retire? No, but no matter what promotional spin they put on Sting/HHH, the attraction is seeing Sting in a WWE ring. Not many have sat and listed Sting/HHH as a dream match and it's more likely a mix of HHH's ego & his obsession with Flair/WCW Wrestlers.
The only H match that piqued my curiosity was HHH/Rock. I've always found their rivalry to be much more storied and layered than Austin/Rock and would have enjoyed seeing them finally get an official 1 on 1 Mania match (maybe a little Austin involvement too)
My issue with Sting/HHH is that it doesn't promise to excite between the ropes. I have a feeling HHH will want to work a more relaxed pace like he did back in '03. Like wading through toffee I heard his movements described as back then.
Ah, well.

Sting. Having worked out a deal with Sting they have to put him against somebody for 31, it has to be a big name with a similar sort of level of star power who can afford the loss, and Triple H is one of the very few on that level who could actually drag a watchable match out of him.

Where's the option for the wall, not the wrestler, the actual wall, to think about what he's done for like 4 hours?

The old school NWA mark in Triple H wanted to be the first person to wrestle Sting in a WWE ring. Anyone else was not in his mind for Mania.
