Couldn't it easily happen with his current storyline?
He loses to Rusev at Mania, to a deafening pop.
Next night, he comes out and cuts a huge promo on fans for turning their back on America by cheering Rusev. They let their hatred for "the machine, man" overcome their love for their country, they're scum and they don't deserve to live here.
It would be like Bret Hart in 97 turned inside out, some places he would be absolutely beloved.

John Cena is never turning heel. It wouldn't even really be a heel turn, more that he's playing his base harder than ever and actively criticizing the other side, which he's not done. He wouldn't have to change his convictions as a character, that would be a natural thing to push a guy over the edge.

I can approve of this, only if in exchange, we get Jack Swagger coming to the ring dressed like an eight-year-old rapping Marine who cuts promos about how his opponents are poopy.

Has John Cena been pushed too far? will he finally snap?
we promise you it's different this time, he's never been pushed this far before. We definitely don't do this storyline every 6 months, the stakes are the highest they've ever been this time, honest.

A pro-America heel won't stick. It didn't stick with Real Americans and that was a for more aggressive attempt at it than the OP's suggestion

honestly with the streak ending last year , I think they might pull the trigger on a Cena heel turn . But first they need someone to out sell him in merchandise. This may be off topic , I do like the fact Cena is not main eventing WM - but a feud with Rusev for the US tiltle seems like a waste of his time & talent . Instead , it should have been Cena V. Bryan in a #1 contenders match - with the winner challenging for the wwe title on the next wwe ppv

Many people thought Bret would never turn heel. At this point the crowd is forcing them.

I don't even think the Cena/Rusev feud is anything to do with "USA USA." Even though they mention it, I think Rusev is beyond that, mocking Cena for being past it and not in his league. That's nothing to do with flag waving.
And if I was at Mania I would totally boo Cena, not just because, y'know, it's Cena, but the way this storyline has been handled its almost impossible to root for the guy. "I deserve to be at Mania, give me a rematch" has pretty much been his character. f*** that guy.

I know some on here have trashed Cena on here during the Cena/Rock feud but I thought he at least reasonably held his own in that. It's hard to hold your own as a face against the Rock, especially in recent years, but I thought he put forth some decent stuff. As best as he could anyway. Recently it's almost as though they're forcefully insisting on this heel turn that won't happen, which is coming off pretty stupid. If you don't want to do it, don't do this weird half ass tease for it over and over. Because I'm not buying that he's turning heel and nor is anyone else, so we're left with this guy that's supposed to be a face just coming off stupid.

Cena is booed because his character is obnoxious not because he loves America. That's the center of the whole thing. He makes it about America and patriotism and guilt-trips everyone, instead of looking within and realizing that it's him that people don't like. They can even have Jack Swagger come out and point this out, saying "I got cheered when I fought Rusev, and I'm as American as it gets. Why didn't they cheer for you? It's not about America, it's because they don't like you!" and Cena demolishes him in a rage. People didn't hate Bret Hart, at first, because he hated America. They hated him because he was whiny and people were tired of him. He's the one that made it about America, it was an excuse, a scapegoat. That's what I want here, and in WWE's current atmosphere, it would absolutely work.

Just a man painting himself in a country's colors in a desperate attempt to absolve himself of criticism. It's more about Cena being delusional and pushed over the edge than anything, I think people are taking this a different direction based on the title.
