Im guessing out of everyone here there must be a few others who listen to this podcast and heard this episode where Ari and fellow comedian Mike Lawrence discussed the wrestling biz. For those who don't know the podcast, each episode has Ari with a different guest broadly discussing a subject that is part of the guest's life and that Ari is interested in or would like to know more about, he knows basically nothing of wrestling since he stopped watching in the late 80s as a teen. It's been out a few weeks but I only got through it today and was wondering what other wrestling fans thoughts on it were, thought it would be better to just make a thread about it because Im not sure where else to post this.
I was a bit skeptical before listening (suitable given the name of the podcast) as I didnt know what kind of fan Mike was going to be but when he was talking about Vince being a crazy old out of touch guy I was like "ok, phew, he's one of us." I just didnt want it being someone who loves all the crap on Raw and doesnt know about the indies and would be too cringeworthy to listen to but Mike did a really good job, I can see him being a poster on here (I really hope he is now). I was glad he was getting the years of all the events he mentioned correct and stuff, as he said at the beginning he knew there would be scrutinous hardcore wrestling fans listening!
One thing I kind of didnt agree with was when he was saying the appeal of wrestling is being able to cheer and affect the dynamic of the match, sure that can be fun for people but for the most part people arnt watching it at the arena when theyre watching but he did mention my take on the appeal of it later which is an escape into this crazy universe where you dont have to think about the crap in the real world around you (which is why it's so infuriating to us lifelong fans when WWE does things so poorly and it becomes a frustrating chore to watch instead of an enjoyable escape). One thing I would have brought up if I was there while they were talking about there being smaller wrestlers and such around now is how alot of wrestlers now were fans and wrestling geeks who grew up watching in the 80s and 90s and really wanted to get involved compared to back in the day when it was a closed business and the boys had to be hard c***s to be able to protect the business and definitely not skinny fan boy marks! I just find that a fascinating thing about wrestling history.
Anyway just wanted to see if anyone else enjoyed it and if not check it out if you want to hear an educated fan explain wrestling stuff to a non fan with an open mind. He touches on the rise of Stone Cold, the whole Punk deal and loads of other stuff. Oh and he attended a Raw that featured a Hornswoggle vs Torito match, bless him.
