So... This is what I am thinking.
You have the Daniel Bryan/CM Punk/Samoa Joe/Colt Cabana/AJ Styles/Cesaro indy group that made it in some shape or form.
You also have Kevin/Owens/Sami Zayne/Adrian Neville/Finn Balor/whoever else you want to lump in with them.
What is the more talented group of rising stars?
I think the first group, but the new guys have the higher ceiling and more important people in their corners.

We won't know till its all said in done, but if I were a betting man, I'd go with the later just do to the fact that they're not having to fight as big of an uphill battle to get to the top.

I agree they could have an easier road to the main event, but I was thinking more on terms of Raw talent. I don't know if any of those guys are the sheer forces of nature and wrestling talent that Daniel Bryan and CM Punk are/were.

I agree none come near Bryan in wrestling talent, but despite my love for Punk, he's not the be-all end-all of wrestling like Bryan is. And Steen is definitely a force of nature.

None of the guys of the prior generation have the charisma/swag of Balor or the athletic awesomeness of Neville.

CM Punk and especially Daniel Bryan are two of the best all time for me, haven't seen much of the newer ones as I don't really watch indies or NXT for that matter but hopefully they can make an impact and be entertaining for years to come, from what I hear they are a good bunch!

The new generation are great and everything, and they'll probably go down in history as the better generation because of the easier road they (and future generations) will have to the WWE. That being said, it is easily the former generation. The first crop of guys who got their big breaks in early TNA/early ROH or wherever was amazing. It's why 2004-6 ROH was infinitely better than 09-11 ROH, because the talent pool was that much deeper. That time period of the first generation is referred to as the golden era of ROH and the indies in general, and that is why. As I said, the new generation is great, but they're not a patch on the originial indie kids.

Considering Balor, Itami, Owens, Zayn, etc are about the same age as Joe and Bryan, etc - they're the same.
I'd class the generation after Bryan as the ones like Young Bucks and Mike Bennett types.

There's way too much crossover in the ages and years they worked the indies to group them this way. At least in my opinion.

Do Itami & Balor count? They did come from 2 of the biggest Japanese promotions.

I think its really interesting how the wrestlers have evolved from the likes of Dynamite Kid/Steamboat/ to Hart/Perfect to Benoit/Guerrero/Jericho/ to your list.

It is true that the indie guys in NXT right now are the same age as Punk and Bryan, and were really just busy elsewhere or not picked up till now. They really are all of the same generation.
There's smaller generations of guys where you can divide it into guys who came around in the early 2000s, mid 2000s, late 2000s, etc..., but for this purpose, same generation really.

Whichever generation has Seth Rollins. He debuted in 2003, I'd put him with Bryan and Punk.

I think people are confusing the generation thing with people's ages/when they debuted whereas I think the OP is referring to people making a big splash on the indies/TNA so in that context you have Daniels, AJ, Joe, Punk, Aries, Sydal, Dragon, Nigel etc. who made it big in the first half of the decade compared to Neville, Steen, Zayn, Ambrose, Balor, Rollins, Cole etc. who made it big in the second half of the decade.

The first group with the guys on the early ROH & TNA shows are easily the best.
-Daniel Bryan -CM Punk -AJ Styles -Samoa Joe -Christopher Daniels -Nigel McGuiness -Austin Aries -Cesaro -Chris Hero -Homicide -Low Ki -Chris Sabin -Alex Shelly -Colt Cabana -Petey Williams -Roderick Strong -Michael Shane -Super Dragon -Jimmy Jacobs -Sonjay Dutt -Matt Sydal -Mike Quackenbush -BJ Whitmere

None of the guys of the prior generation have the charisma/swag of Balor or the athletic awesomeness of Neville. AJ circa 2002/2003 was on Neville's level, and has been able to adapt to aging and become even better as a wrestler. And Punk is literally a charisma in sentient form, if he had 9/10ths of the charisma he has he wouldn't have made it far out of IWA-MS.

I saw Bryan, Cesaro, Owens, Zayn, and Rollins all on the same ROH show live in January 2008. To me they're the same group, or at least there's enough overlap. They were all around when I was into ROH, except for Punk and Joe who were before that.
