What are some examples of TV shows that went on a lot longer than they should have? One of my picks is "That '70s Show." As much as I like that show, I feel that the show did not need to last nearly a decade. It probably would have been better if the show had ended in 2002 or 2003 at most if they really wanted to make the years go on in the show's real time. Not all shows need to have a long run, and this one didn't need one, but it did have one.
What do you think lasted long and should have ended sooner?

Only Fools and Horses. Should have ended earlier than what was the supposed first ending (when they got rich) and the later episodes really tarnished the reputation of what was a great comedy.
House. I never watched all the episodes from the last couple of seasons but what I did see made me wish they ended it far sooner.

The Office (US Version)...should have ended when Carrell left. Two & Half Men should have ended when Sheen was fired

You're going to hate me for saying it, and you probably already know I'm going to say it.
Community.
It's been given about 30 different stays of execution in its time, despite putrid ratings, yet its most rabid fans act as though its been mistreated during its entire run. It had five seasons on network television and now has a sixth season approaching. There are shows that would have killed for a six-season run, yet we're supposed to believe that's not enough for a show that (in my opinion) hasn't been watchable since midway through the second season?

In the Britcom world: Brittas Empire had a good ending with the last Fegen/Norriss episode. Then they decided to keep the show going with no Laura, and new writers. Still some good episodes, but I can see how people thought it was long in the tooth.
I love Ab Fab, but I still say they should leave it alone. It hasn't felt the same from Last Shout on.
And Coupling didn't need that fourth season (NBC knock notwithstanding). Wait for Richard Coyle to be available, and then do a one-off special.
Little Britain when they ran all the catchphrases into the ground.
Back to the US, ABC ran Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley ragged. ESPECIALLY the "Laverne, Where's Shirley?" final season of the latter.

ER. It may just be how I couldn't get into some of the characters that they brought in later on, but that show went on far too long for me. I'd say 6 seasons or so was enough.

According To Jim went for 8 long years You try making a laugh free comedy for 8 years. You can't do it. You'd make a joke once even by mistake. That they managed so long is an achievement.

Two and A Half Men went on 12 years too long...
The X-Files went on too long in my opinion as did Smallville.
