16 German students and 2 teachers from the same school were on board.
The black box has already been found, so hopefully the families of those who lost their lives will have some answers relatively soon.
Seeing pictures of where the crash happened, it's going to be a tricky process to recover the bodies and debris.

The plane did not deviate from its planned trajectory outside of dropping about 1000/minute for 8 minutes. Really, I cannot help but to wonder if both pilots were not asleep (not as uncommon as you might think), which would only be an issue if some sensor like the altimeter malfunctioned.

May have suffered a decompression. Pilots passed out and it just descended into the mountains

May have suffered a decompression. Pilots passed out and it just descended into the mountains There has been massive decompressions in the past. Hell, there have been airplanes that had their roofs get blown off before. The pilots are always able to at the very least signal a distress call. It sounds like it did not happen this time.

Just going off what I know as a former ATC but it does look alot like some type of decompression issue along with a clerical error. With the decompression the pilot can program in an automatic decent immediately but at 38K feet you are gonna pass out pretty damn quick from lack of oxygen. Clerical error could come in on what the altimeter was set to (mountainous areas the barometric pressure can vary greatly) so as to prevent the automatic collision detection from operating properly in that area. Fact it was a continuous (non erratic) rate of decent means it was done deliberately, probably by using autopilot programming. Problem is they got the target altitude wrong.

Based on cockpit voice recording, apparently one of the pilots was locked out of the cockpit and trying to get back in before it went down. Perhaps the other pilot passed out in the cockpit. Might lead to an investigation over whether it was a deliberate act, as unpleasant as that would be.

You would think if anyone had a key to the cockpit it would be the f***ing guy that flies the plane.

You would think if anyone had a key to the cockpit it would be the f***ing guy that flies the plane. From what I have gathered, they do have a combination number system to get into the cockpit, but in can be overridden by the people inside. Also there should always be 2 people in the cockpit, even if it is just a flight attendant, to be able to open the door if the person at the helm is incapacitated. I am not going to jump to conclusions, but protocol seems to have been broken in this incident.

NBC News is reporting that the co-pilot crashed the plane intentionally.
My God.

Wow, that's shocking.
I don't see it being terrorism, simply due to the crash happening in an isolated area rather than somewhere populated.
I'm thinking it could have been a mental health issue, I wouldn't be surprised to hear that he had problems in his personal life. Does anybody know if pilots are required to undergo psychological testing on a regular basis? Is it up to the individual airlines?
Whatever the reason, I can't imagine what the families are going though, knowing that it was deliberate and not just an accident.

People are already saying it's terrorism. That is until it's decided that religion he is.

Ok seriously that's f***ed up.
I'm sorry but if this is some sort of suicide from the pilot than all I have to say is, you unbelievably selfish prick.
If you can't take life anymore than that's your own business, but don't f***ing take 150 people with you.
Lufthansa needs to make sure it's pilots are in the right frame of mind.
Same for any other airliner for that matter.

It's happened before. An Egypt plane was deliberately crashed by the co-pilot.

I think the fastest and easiest to implement change that will come out of this is likely a worldwide mandate of the American rule that there must always be two persons in the cockpit at all times. As in, a pilot goes out to take a leak, a flight attendant has to come into the cockpit while he's away.
Not saying that'll completely prevent any sort of situation with a mentally disturbed pilot; people have said "What's stopping him from just killing the FA then?", but at the same time, it's arguably a lot bigger of a mental jump to directly murder someone with your hands than to just push down on the flight stick.
That and this also effectively guarantees that we'll never, ever see single-pilot flying of airliners, which I've always thought was a profoundly stupid idea anyway.

This is a f***ed up situation.
And f*** the co-pilot if this is true. I know depression can be a bitch. But f*** don't do that. He is no better than one of those psychos that shoot up schools, or blow themselves up in crowded areas.

I guess that they're going to have to have a 3rd air safety person in the cockpit at all times now. Which is probably something that they should have done long ago. There's too many innocent lives at risk for some psycho to crash a plane because he is the epitome of an douchebrella.
