For the life of me I don't know how to play it at all. I just see a bunch of text and buttons.
What am I supposed to do, especially getting started with things? Any help or advice, anything for a confused TEW newbie?

I would actually recommend starting a new game with your own promotion (go to the database and add one). I know it seems backwards to start from scratch if you're new instead of using an already established company, but I was like you at first, but then I decided to try that anyway and it really helps getting familiar with the game's mechanics and logic as you have to go through all the options and it makes it easier to understand what does what as it comes up whenever you need it. Plus if you're the owner you don't have to worry about goals so you can just test things out.
So go ahead and start a new game with your own promotion. Don't worry about scheduling shows at first, just look for people to hire. I recommend finding one decent referee, one or two announcers, one road agent and a dozen wrestlers (note: remember you'll need a few jobbers or else booking storylines will quickly become Hell so hire more than just guys you'll need for storylines).
Then decide what your schedule for shows should be. Of course, starting with a new promotion, you'll probably want a touring schedule with two or three shows per month tops.
Book your first show, setting up any card you want and pay careful attention to who have the best matches and especially if there are wrestlers who work together well (or at the opposite end of the spectrum, don't work well together), you might want to do this for two or three shows, then start booking storylines depending on who's popular, how well they work together, who you want to push, etc...
And really, the rest you don't even really need to worry about as you will receive prompts whenever something important comes up and it will become obvious fairly quickly what you need to do.

I actually found the opposite, starting my own company was a nightmare but starting with WWE made it easy.
I actually recommend playing the free version first. I think it's called Extreme Warfare Revenge? It's like TEW lite. A much simplified version so you get used to the way things work. I played that for a week or so and once I got TEW I found it fairly simple from the get go. Play Extreme Warfare first and that'll get you used to everything and make TEW much simpler.
Persevere with it, TEW is freaking awesome once you get to grips with it. I loved some of my feuds and storylines and loved making Big Show job to everyone.

I actually recommend playing the free version first. I think it's called Extreme Warfare Revenge? extreme Warfare Revenge is indeed free but it's a version of the spiritual predecessor of TEW. There is a proper free version of TEW called TEW 2005.

The GreyDog forums are very good for starting out, lots of useful info on their
