X-2 really feels like when the series jumped the shark and has not been the same since. I still say IX is the best. Feels like a mix of my other 2 favorites rolled into one game (VI and VII). I can't stand XII's fighting engine and it's why I can't get into the XIII games either. They need to go back to basics and make something like VI or VII, just make it bigger.

I didn't like 12's single player MMO style either. But... The battle system in XIII basically played itself, (which combined with the areas being uninteresting, and the story being overly complex and still pretty much completely nonsensical is why I think it's absolutely the worst one in the series.) I can appreciate trying something new... but they seem to want to try to reinvent the wheel constantly and failing every time.

X-2 really feels like when the series jumped the shark and has not been the same since. That's around the time Hironobu Sakaguchi got sacked "resigned" from Square so it makes sense. His pet project Spirits Within lost Square a lot of money and they responded by releasing a crap ton of spinoffs of their more popular titles to recover.

I think XIII could be a good game but when I played it, it did not feel like a Final Fantasy game or even an RPG at all. It felt like an AAA title that I was to like because it was an AAA title and nothing more. That and Square trying so damn hard to get Lightning over when she's a pretty lame protagonist that never got over with the majority of players. She is in a way the Roman Reigns of gaming. The game just felt very strange and I can't say I enjoyed it. I hope XIV does well for how long that's been in development. I'm still not sure what the think of the Xenoblade like fighting style they put in it but if they go out and make it as much of a sandbox game as it looks then it could be the best FF game we've seen in a long time.

You mean XV, XIV's been out it's the second MMO... which was terrible... so terrible the team felt they had to apologize to people... and then rebuild the game from the ground up.

I keep wondering if there is any actual hope of them putting out another Final Fantasy that actually has Fantasy in it. I'm currently at the very end of IX after a play through from VI to IX and I keep wondering why it feels as if all they want to throw out now is this odd sci-fi junk with no special or fun characters and environments. Playing through the a fore mentioned games makes me feel as if Square will only put that kind of feel in Kingdom Hearts. While I like KH its not even remotely the same. Not that X was terrible, but it just felt from then on they keep phasing out a lot of the elements that endeared me to the franchise and that maybe I'm better off just being done with it

The very first game had a fiend's lair on a satelite and the hardest enemy in the game was a mech. I think the series drew a lot from the early Ultima series and didn't drop those elements later on. Since then, they've had a sliding scale of how much fantasy or sci-fi the series has, sometimes swinging more towards fantasy (I'd argue with IV, V, IX, and XII) and other times more towards sci-fi (I'd argue VI-VIII, X, and XIII).

I'm probably a bigger fan of XII than most people. Although I did like Vaan and Penelo, I wish they didn't require a spinoff to flesh out their story arcs.
