Before the Funk-a-saurus gimmick. Before being ADR's bodyguard. When he started out in NXT, did anyone see him as a potential future "world champion"?
Did the WWE flounder when they had those promos hyping his return, one to debut as the dance machine. And then, when he turn heel on Jason Albert, that went no where too, and then he disappeared for good, never to be seen again.
Did he have a chance?

No but he easily could have been a Rusev-level monster heel.

You're asking specifically pre-Funkasaurus, right?
Because the original Funkasaurus, before being taken off tv for a month and retooled, could have been this generation's Dusty Rhodes.

Nah. He might have been a Autumn challenger, but he wasn't skilled enough to be a world champ, which hey, just some people aren't.

TNA should have really gave him a knockoff of Uptown Funk with two Funkadactyl knockoffs.

Didn't people loathe him as G-Rilla? I'm relatively sure he was one of the guys people say stunk, yet he was in developmental for a heck of a long time and given chances he wouldn't have gotten if he weren't Tommy Dreamer's pet project.

I never sensed a main eventer when I first saw Brodus. With the right booking and heavy protection, you MIGHT be able to push him to World Heavyweight level, but I sincerely doubt it would've been worth the effort.
WWE... not a chance.

That's what I was gonna say. I remember a lot of disdain toward G-Rilla. No way anybody on here pointed to him as WWE Champ material. The one thing I wish they would've done is have Tensai turn heel with him and Brodus and Tensai go on an absolute monster heel rampage through the tag team division. Would've been fun, oh well.

He was goofy fun but I just couldn't picture him as the main champion of a promotion. In addition to having one of the worst physiques in history the guy just didn't seem skilled at all. Guilty pleasure comic relief with occasional mean streak was his niche but he wasn't anywhere near a Dusty Rhodes in any way.

It would have had to have been forced. I don't think he was a good enough wrestler to get over as a main event wrestler. I don't see him being able to have main event caliber matches with Cena, Punk, Bryan, and Orton, who were the top stars for most of Clay's time there. I don't see him getting over enough. Again, they would have had to have forced it.

No
He was best suited as a mid-card comedy guy, who had short matches, danced, and made people laugh between more intense segments.
This was the position he was in, so naturally WWE changed it with a heel turn, stripped away his gimmick, then released him because "creative has nothing for you", despite the fact that he could have remained in the role they DID have for him.

I could have sworn that I heard about WWE being big on him and seeming him as a great potential monster heel. To be honest though I never got it. As tms said, his physique was terrible. He neckbeard didn't help either. I did enjoy his initial funkasaurus stuff but I never saw him as anything beyond that.

The Great Khali was World Heavyweight champion once. The. Great. Khali. Brodus Clay could have been World Heavyweight champion easily.

Brodus may have had the worst match I've ever seen live.
