Basically, when the Dudleys would set up the 3D, the crowd would kind of smatteringly chant "threeeeeee deeee!"
I can't think of any other move that gets that type of reaction. I have no idea how it started but it seems to be very consistent in Dudley Boyz matches. It really seems to be an overlooked thing but the 3D was f***ing OVER as a finisher.

Can remember there being a DDT chant on that Raw when Jake Roberts turned up to randomly attack the Shield.
Then there was that weird period where they tried their damnedest to get people to chant for Edge's spear, they didn't, then after he turned heel then face again then they started chanting for it.

I know what you mean, I think it's a combo of the move being amazing in the first place and then benefiting from having a nice easy name.

I have no idea how it started Bubba would yell "3D" when doing the move, and the crowd caught on.

Wow, I saw the thread's title and knew exactly what it'd be about - the fact that the 3D chant was just random, yet audible, yells from all over the crowd and not one big unified chant like most are.
The only thing I can think of that compares (somewhat) is the "YES!" chant - namely, at times when Bryan's not doing it. Unlike most of the chants when Bryan leads it, it comes across as a giant audience-wide smattering of random people doing it. It's a good visual effect, makes the whole "YES movement" look more legitimate when the people are the ones doing it at their own whim.
But the 3D chant was always consistent in being its own audience-driven thing. Kinda had a chaotic (ECW-ish) vibe to it, too.

You mean the "Spear? spear, spearspearspear...Spear" routine by Edge that lasted about 2 weeks?

I thought about the Spear and the RKO but really, it's not the same.

I think it boils down to a combination of it being a well protected, cool looking finisher, that is also easy to pronounce/chant.
Seriously try starting up an "Attitude Adjustment" chant... way too many damned syllables.

My first thought was the DDT. I went to an indy show this weekend with Brutus Beefcake on the card, and people chanted "hair-cut!" constantly.

There's times when Bryan's doing the "YES!" in the corner when setting up the Knee Plus, and you have the people doing it in unison, which I like. Example of this would be the cage segment where he turned on Bray and Bryan started doing the points slowly then building up gradually, with the fans joining along too.

The example I thought of re: Bryan was at the end of WM30. When he wins (SPOILER ALERT!!! ) the crowd starts it on their own and it goes a little while until Bryan starts doing it. In those few moments after the win, it's disorganized and not very much in unison........but it is all over the arena, and it works. Moments like that are when you know the "gimmick" absolutely succeeded, and that it's got a life of its own that doesn't necessarily need the writers in the back or even the guy in the ring directing the fan's every reaction. And that moment with Bray and Bryan in the cage showed just how much it worked too. Silent points up in unison with VERY loud and enthusiastic crowd points.

It reminds me of the oohhhhhhOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH people do with Bryan's running dropkick in the corner.

There were DDT chants for Jake Roberts in the 1980s. I am pretty sure I heard DDT chants for the Freebirds in WCW as well. That's the first move I remember that was chanted in anticipation of the move being used.

Extreme Rules 2010 was on WWE Network Sunday and I caught it just as the Chris Jericho vs. Edge steel cage match was about to begin, and I laughed when Matt Striker said something to the effect of, "will we hear the Universe say, 'Spear! Spear! Spear!'?" Well Matt, I can give you the answer, and it's "no," because no matter how hard WWE tried (and they tried SO DAMN HARD) that chant gained zero traction.

The first thing I thought of that was closest to the 3D chant was late 2010/early 2011 where as you mentioned the spear chant actually did catch on, but not in the "spear spear spear spear" way they wanted, when he was hitting or about to hit a spear there was an audible "SPEEEUHHHHH" a lot of the time.
