@adamschefter: ESPN obtained medical charts that show Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul had right index finger amputated today. That isn't legal. That violates a shitload of HIPAA rules. Nobody said they didn't have an intern break into the record room, take the charts, and haul ass.

For the hospital employee or whoever it is that leaked the information, it absolutely is a violation. For ESPN and Adam Schefter, it is not. HIPAA doesn't apply to members of the media who obtain medical records.

I smell a scandal.
Not that anything's going to happen to ESPN though.

Some dipshit in the hospital probably took picture of the record with their cellphone, and I hope they nail them with everything possible.

@adamschefter: ESPN obtained medical charts that show Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul had right index finger amputated today. That'd explain his refusal to meet with the Giants' reps the past two days.

I smell a scandal. Not that anything's going to happen to ESPN though. Nothing should happen to ESPN or Adam Schefter. Believe me, I enjoy treating the Worldwide Leader in Sports like a punching bag just as much as the next guy, but this is simply good reporting by Adam Schefter. The only person who will be in hot water is whoever actually handed the documents to Schefter. From that moment on, it was a reporter doing his job.

That is incredibly dumb and sad about JPP. I heard on NFL radio earlier that he lost a finger, but is still expected to play.

Jason Pierre-Paul's right index finger amputation was reportedly done to "minimize the damage" to his hand following a fourth of July fireworks accident.

Honestly it's not like missing an index finger will disrupt JPP's pass rushing and defense so it's not a huge deal in that regard.

ESPN is saying HIPAA doesn't apply to news organizations I find that very hard to believe Hate to defend ESPN, but in this case they are right. Only way it wouldn't be is if for example, you worked for a medical newsletter or your employer was a direct healthcare provider (as in a hospital or urgent care facility). Actually if you are a reporter you can walk right into a hospital and if you know the patient's complete name you can get any info you want provided you know a) The patients name, b) The hospital/med facility has informed the patient of their HIPAA rights and c) The patient hasn't opted out of the "directory". Yeah if ESPN just went and got this info looks like it's all good. If they got it from an employee who illegally obtained it though, the employee is screwed, ESPN is in the clear.

You can go in and confirm that the patient is in and even get a room number, but they are not allowed to tell you anything regarding why they are there at the hospital (though sometimes the room number alone is sort of a gimmie). They cannot tell you that someone is getting a finger cut off, that they are being treated for cocaine overdose, or even that they are in to get their penis reduced because their manhood was just too big. Actual medical information is not something that they can give out.
