I've been seriously impressed with his work as a ref in NXT. I know WWE tries to keep your attention away from the ref, which does make sense, but this guy has a presence in the ring. I know there are plenty of "superstar" referees, Hebner/Robinson/White, to name a few, but Drake is well on his way, and has his own unique style. His long time experience/knowledge from actually wrestling obviously gives him a huge boost compared to someone that has either limited in-ring experience, or someone strictly trained as a referee. It also helps that he's worked with a few of the guys on the roster prior to working for WWE. That same experience & knowledge I mentioned is a great tool for working with some of the greener talent when it comes to match pacing, knowing how to work a crowd, etc. If I remember correctly, he was working main events down in NXT pretty damn quickly too. Given a couple years, he'll be working WrestleMania main events too.
I finally got around to watching the WM/Hideo episode of NXT, and decided to give the dude the credit he deserves. I'm pretty sure I've seen a thread or two about Drake in the past, but it's been a long time since if I'm not mistaken. Thoughts?

He has a very distinctive face, so as a ref he sticks out. It's cool though, he does a good job. His face helps him emote and sell the action, or concern when speaking to a wrestler, etc.

Another good thing about him is, considering his history, imagine the ref bumps.

Drake is awesome. I'd basically would love to see him take the spot that guys like Chioda, Tim Wright, Lil' Naitch, and Jimmy Korderas have occupied, guys who were recognizable and did a great job helping to tell the story in the ring.

Also, while there are horror stories about the way certain wrestlers may act, Drake is seriously the kindest and the best person ever to talk to. Always a smile on his face, always loves to be there. We need more of those guys getting the recognition for the hard work they do around these parts.

I was just thinking how good he is after seeing this gif in the Divas thread: He adds to matches (and angles, like above) without drawing too much attention. Perfect refereeing.

Another good thing about him is, considering his history, imagine the ref bumps. I almost want him to be that "one ref you DON'T mess with" - a ref that bumps and gets up, or one that catches you with the chair, takes it from you, clobbers you with it and THEN DQs you

He's bowling shoe ugly, bless his heart! Good ref tho Years of hard drug abuse and deathmatches are killer on the body. Its great to see him be a performer at this level, even if he's wearing a stripped shirt all the time. And like others have said, if he gets moved up to the main roster he should have the gimmick of being the ref that's used in extreme circumstances when it "wouldn't be safe" for most refs either because of abuse by competitors, outside interference, or violent feuds.

I am legitimately scared to show support for the guy. Dudes just do damn likable, and gives so much to the business, but im afraid he'll suffer for getting over as a ref at some point.
