This thread is not meant at all to discuss the Benoit controversy as that has been done a million times. But if you were to meet a wrestler at and autograph signing, in public etc., does anyone have any experience as far as saying to them "I loved the match you had with Chris Benoit at (whatever event). Its one of my favorite matches". Is that frowned upon due to the sensitive topic, or should you talk in more general terms like "I loved your main event title match at WMXX" for example without mentioning his name? Just wondering if anyone has experienced anything like this.

Well, I'd never do it. Mainly because, you really can't think of another good match that dude had that doesn't involve Benoit? Why even bring it up? Even if your all time favorite match involved Benoit, be polite and respectful.

It's probably less of a problem depending on the wrestler and how they take it- witness how in Jericho's second book, it was a running point that Jericho was genuinely saddened that all of his classics with Benoit would never be seen again and that he was unhappy he couldn't put any on his DVD sets. It probably depends on the wrestler and if they were close with Benoit beforehand or not, but it doesn't seem like it'd particularly a problem to compliment a match they had with them if it's one of your personal favorites.

Yeah, Jericho might be cool with it, since he's said basically "That wasn't my friend. I miss my friend."

If one of your closest friends, or workmates, turned out to be a murderer, and had murdered someone else you worked with and liked, and their child, and nearly killed your entire industry... would you want to be told about how good it was when you worked with them?
This is a truly terrible idea.

It really does just depend on the person, as has been said Jericho would probably appreciate it, since he still talks highly of Benoit.

I wouldn't. At best, it'd be unnecessarily uncomfortable.

Even if you meant it in all sincerity and the wrestler in question loved Benoit as a friend and cherished the memories they had together... they're almost certainly still going to think that you're being a dick for mentioning it.

I've been to enough autograph signings to know you don't have a long window of time for small talk. In the 15 seconds you have to make an impression, why would you want to discuss Chris Benoit?

I've talken to a few wrestlers about Benoit actually and both times they actually brought him up first. As long as you're sounding respectful and educated, you can talk about most topics, including guys like Benoit, without it being totally tasteless
