"Konami has erased P.T. from the PlayStation Network, killing what it probably saw as little more than a commercial for a now-canceled game. Thing is, it was more than a commercial. It was more than a GAME. It was a crucial piece of history that Konami has erased.
This doesn't matter to game publishers, but it should matter to us. The digital age is coming, and companies get to decide what becomes history and what becomes forgotten. We can't archive anything, and we should care."

For once, Mr. Sterling, we actually agree on something*. Shit like this is why I'm pro-emulation and wary of an all digital future...
*Truthfully, I haven't really watched any other episode of The Jimquisition...

I worry about the future of gaming if it goes full download. Will companys that release games in the same series, like EA and Madden and whoever does Call of Duty, withdraw the ability to download games when the new ones come out. I wish we could just burn them and keep them on a disc, but pirates mess that up. Then this is from someone who usually buys used games, but would download them if I got a discount. I get more for my money with the cover and box art.

Film and TV lost a lot of their early history mostly due to a lack of foresight. 75% of silent films have been lost. Nobody at the BBC ever envisioned a future where people in 2015 may like to watch 60s Dr Who episodes because they probably assumed we'd be driving flying cars on the moon by now so they taped over them.
Videogames should have been the first medium to learn lessons from the past and prevented that but instead big publishers gleefully create conditions for the same thing to happen again. We could be moving towards a future where everybody plays always-online streamed games and who knows if anybody will even be able to be preserve those once the servers get turned off.

We could be moving towards a future where everybody plays always-online streamed games The day that happens will be the day gaming is no longer for me. I flat out refuse to buy digital-only for anything.
