Doesn't seem like the days of Sin Cara are happening anymore.
The only time we get a surprise debut on the main roster will be either a return or someone who already debuted in NXT 6 months prior.

Sting, but other than that maybe AJ Styles if he ever were to join.

Sting, but other than that maybe AJ Styles if he ever were to join. I feel like Sting is the last person to get that treatment. AJ Styles is coming into the Full Sail Zone as Allan Clash.

I think certain guys should be able to. Or have them be hella watered down versions of themselves in NXT.

NXT is kinda weird now, as it's no longer a strict developmental territory as it used to be, given the fact that dudes are thrown straight onto TV without any adjusting to the WWE style. It's moreso now just the place for experienced guys to go and introduce them to the audience as opposed to improving in ring and on the microphone.

The only way I could see it happening is with people who are otherwise not there for the long haul and special cases.
Like, if Goldberg were to come to some deal with WWE for a brief return, he wouldn't go to NXT, though he may potentially go to the performance center to train for his return. Though, even then, they might do what Jericho and I think Rock did, and have him do it elsewhere to not blow the return ahead of time, like have him go to Lance Storm's school to get the rust off, like one or both of those guys did, I forget.

Why would anyone want to bypass NXT? Great place to showcase yourself.

The only people who could are those who've already worked for WWE and are a) familiar to the audience and b) are well-versed in WWE style (I would think guys like Gallows or Compton, given their lower-card status last time they were on the roster, would be put on NXT if they ever re-signed).
Otherwise, there's nobody out there who would skip NXT; doesn't matter if it's Styles, the Bucks, Okada, or the Briscoes, they're all doing a stint in Full Sail.

I think the level of exposure NXT has now relative to when Sin Cara was signed is another big thing; it makes little business sense to have someone who isn't a Sting-level name do at least a quick run down there. It's televised, merchandised, and now on the road in front of incredibly hot crowds. On top of learning to adapt to the WWE's way of doing things, they're now on the Network, and as much as the core NXT audience is more hardcore fans there are plenty who aren't. Sami Zayn showing up on Raw is a good example; because NXT has exposed him to a wider audience than people who know only of his indie work. Developmental is no longer in the dark, and that means it's much less of a "Do I have to?" situation.

People who were in WWE before and are familiar to the audience are really the only people I could see skipping it entirely anymore. Sin Cara I killed the skip for anyone else, and I think even AJ Styles would spend some time there, maybe not a lot, but some.

Even if they could it seems like a bad idea. WWE has a certain style that they like their wrestlers to use when in the ring and NXT does a great job of introducing them to this style with minimal risk. It is invaluable to wrestlers to get a chance to adapt without crashing and burning.
I personally like WWE's "style" and when done correctly results in a product that is, at least in my opinion, better than anywhere else in the world. On that same taken the WWE style can also expose people quite easily, especially if they aren't used to that style. With that in mind I prefer to see people have a stint in NXT before going to the main roster.

I don't know why you wouldn't want to, especially if you are someone like AJ Styles, who has worked with a lot of the guys on the NXT roster.

Sin Cara is also a great example of why nobody should get to skip NXT. While I agree with the point, Sin Cara is a very extreme example. Most guys WWE sign know English and have worked in America extensively before. On top of that, Sin Cara had a rotten attitude and probably would have bombed in NXT. I get why people keep using him but I wish it would stop because he's the exception in almost every way, not the rule. Not really a good comparison to use.

I think that's why he's the perfect example though, because if he'd gone to NXT first, before he'd soiled some big shows, he would've bombed on NXT, shown himself to have a shitty attitude and not know how to work in America. These things could be worked on in NXT... or they could be unsuccessful in that regard and he'd get shown the door.

Bingo. The issues that caused Sin Cara to become one of the greatest bombs in WWE history could have been caught early, before he was in front of several million people every week.
If he couldn't FIX any of those issues, he'd never have been in a position to become the ultimate FAN meme. He'd have been Chris Hero'd, rather than Nathan Jones'd.

Even the people familiar to the audience who were in WWE before- right now, I'd assume they might be in the skipping form. However, that may be less the image and more the fact of where they'd be best used (for some reason, I think that a lot of the Chris Jericho/Rob Van Dam types who are part-time performers would be better served being used as NXT Infinity Plus One bosses instead of being midcarders on Raw or Smackdown- and all signs say they might prefer that role to boot.)

Rhyno's an NXT exclusive, there as an experienced hand to help the rookies. He's not going up to the main roster, period.

Chris Jericho had severe trouble getting used to the WWE Style in 1999. And he was wrestling in WCW for years.
