No idea how the critics felt about it,but in my circle of metal heads when Metallica's black album came out it was hated. The band that swore they would never do videos and change ,did just that. Hell to most of us back then Metallica died the day Burton died.

The albums suffered from typical "double album syndrome". If they had taken the 3/4 or so of Load that was good, and combined them with the 1/4 or so of Reload that was good, they would have had another classic on their hands in my opinion. I actually think the overload (pun intended) of filler was the problem, not the change in style. It still sounded like Metallica to me, and I say this as one of their biggest fans. Every one of their albums, even in the early days had a different style/sound. Master Of Puppets sounds nothing like Kill Em All, and Ride The Lightning sounds nothing like Justice for example. As for Maiden who were brought up, I agree that X Factor put out by a different band would have probably been more beloved, but Virtual XI was a mess, at least to me, regardless of what band recorded it. I think X Factor would have been better received if someone other than Harris had produced it. He's half deaf, and so the album sounds terrible. Plug your ears and listen to it, and it sounds better (no joke). Virtual XI, however, I can't really defend. It had good songs, definitely, but it was just meh.

I can agree on Load because I think it's pretty good. Just not what you'd expect from Metallica. Maybe Reload, too, though I thought it was a step down even for the "Altallica" style they were trying out at the time. But St. Anger was just terrible because of hilariously bad lyrics and that godawful snare drum.

I think its silly for any band to make comments like that early in their career, its just going to bite them in the ass later lol.

Plus how horrible the bass sounded on And Justice.

Is there any band on Earth that was mean-spirited and stupid enough to make their own album sound like shit just to spite the new guy?

Justice definitely lacks bass, but I wouldn't say it sounds like shit. To me it's pretty eerie for that reason and it kinda fits. However hearing Blackened with the bass turned up is almost too good and it sucks knowing some of the cool things Newstead was doing weren't even heard.

While they weren't "panned" every album by The Strokes after "Is This It" especially their last two

Yeah, it's all bad Nas. The hatred for both still exists. It Was Written hate was retroactively amended now that people are fine with Nas being mafioso immeadiately after Illmatic, as well as being able to just delete "Nas is Coming" from their MP3 players. "Hate Me Now" is still f***ing terrible. "Owe Me Back" is up there with "Braveheart Party" and "Who Killed It" as the worst f***ing Nas songs ever. You don't enjoy Nas rapping like the little gangster Looney Tune guy?!? It Was Written gets more playback than Illmatic from me by the way. One of the most unfairly hated on albums of all time. The mafioso thing. Why was it ok for Raekwon to do after 36 Chambers of BIG to do after Ready To Die? Cuban Linx and LAD are (rightfully) considered classics, but It Was Written gets shit for it? Cmooooon. Nas already established himself as someone who was for lack of a better word "above" the mafioso trend of the time. Raekwon had no individual identity until OB4CL, and Biggie took the logical leap from big guy on a small block to King of New York. I like It Was Written a lot, but I can see why people were pissed he sold out so quickly.
