Interesting news here, and gives some interesting context to the potential news (if true) about WWE/NXT forming a relationship with EVOLVE as a feeder system.

Frankly, I don't think any young talent with potential and half a brain is going to be scouting TNA that much anyway.

Besides Steen the former Hawkins signed a deal with this company as well. I mean it makes some sense because you want to get as much cash as possible but it also seems petty at the same time.

WWE and Mattel want to have the exclusive rights to release action figures of WWE's superstars. That plays a major part in this story. WWE did not know about the action figure deal or the Destination America deal, which both broke at around the same time. These deals have lead WWE to look at ROH differently.
There is another thread on here talking about a possible deal or relationship with WWE/NXT and Evolve (or WWN Live). Dave seemed to indicate that this was related to the story about WWE and ROH.

It's not like other promotions making merchandise featuring talent that's now in WWE is a new concept. TNA and ROH have made DVDs featuring matches with guys that went to WWE, and if they have legal right to do so, it's completely fair game.

The thing is, the company making the ROH toys are pretty much a niche company that does most of their sales through comic/toy shops, not retail outlets like Walmart and Target. Even if the first wave does manage to break into that market, don't count on wave 2 doing the same.

It's more to do with the action figures, as the Mattel deal is HUGE for WWE. They'd have preferred Mattel to be the first to produce a Kevin Owens action figure, yet here's this other company who are about to come out with a Kevin Steen action figure which more or less looks the same as the Kevin Owens character (only real difference is the T-Shirt design). And the fact that this company can produce Steen products for FIVE YEARS means Mattel could lose out financially somewhat with a competitor in play with WWE's likeness (to an extent). It's because of this that they now don't want guys and girls going to ROH and TNA where they can have action figure contracts. WWN doesn't have that, so it's a safe and preferred way to go to get into WWE right now.

Mattel wants to have the exclusive right to make action figures of WWE superstars. Now a smaller competitor gets to continue making Kevin Steen action figures for five years. WWE doesn't want this to happen any more, though of course there could be some exceptions WWE would be willing to make if they really wanted a certain talent.

Yeah, but nobody knows who "Kevin Steen" is, they only know "Kevin Owens".
HHH should use that line to Vince.

WWE knows what's important: You don't pick up hot prospects with previous TV experience. That's not what's important.
What's important is preventing 3 ROH discounted action figures from being sold off end caps at Save-A-Lot

'Hey kids, don't sign with any company that will give you better money and exposure that will give you a chance to prove yourself on a larger stage, just keep slogging your way through the C and D grade indies and one day we may pick you up despite being largely unknown quantities.'
Stuff like this will be the death of wrestling because you're going to see talented guys following this request, turning down opportunities, choosing to wait for a WWE call up that never comes. The money isn't there outside of the larger indies and japan, so they'll leave wrestling and the industry will be poorer for it.

BTW, that WON article only *assumes* Steen/Owens is one of the ones that signed a five-year deal - they don't actually confirm it.

If this is indeed true:
*Flashback to 1997* - "I'm Vince McMahon, and I say there's PLENTY of room under the big tent we know as the wrestling industry for there to be more than one company on cable TV!"
God, I hate this company. Monopolies, nature of the beast (that shouldn't exist).
If ROH getting a deal on a small cable station to run re-runs and a deal to produce toys that will only be sold at niche market stores is enough to get WWE telling young talent to avoid it if they have WWE aspirations, that just speaks volumes to how poor the state of US pro wrestling is.

This is a big mistake for the WWE, they are over reacting to this situation. Martel is a giant company that can sell their toys at any toy store or box store in the country. The company that is selling the Kevin Steen toy is a small company that will only be able to sell the toys in limited amount of stores and online. I do not think that Martel is going to lose money because some small toy company which is only known to hardcore wrestling fans is the first to sell a Kevin Owens doll. WWE is making a mistake because some of their biggest stars in the last five years were discovered by ROH. Four out of the last five WrestleMania's had a former ROH champion walk out of the event with the WWE title. ROH is becoming important, ROH is the true development center for the WWE. They should realize this and not only allow new wrestlers to wrestle there, but also encourage them to first try for ROH.

I don't blame WWE. The Mattel deal is one of their biggest and to lose out on exclusivity on someone for what could be their entire WWE run hurts their bottom line. I don't think it is too much to think these guys and girls need to be smarter about the deals they sign if they are gunning for a WWE deal. That is not to say they shouldn't be signing with ROH or taking what they can but if your indie work is only guaranteed for a year or two, signing a 5 year deal for your likeness isn't the best thing to do.

I mean, that's understandable. Sounds like a pure business move than anything stemming from any kind of malice or even ROH being bad for these young workers. Just know what you're signing away at such a young age.

Kevin Owens will be jobbing to Zack Ryder for the next 5 years as punishment.
Then we'll see who wants his silly doll.
