I am pretty sure WWE and Mattel are still able to make Kevin Owens action figures. The issue is that Mattel wants to have exclusive rights to make action figures of WWE superstars, as they are supposed to already have. That's why WWE is not pleased at the idea of signing talent who have existing action figure deals that are multi-year.

They could just demote Owens until his toy contract runs its course.

They could just demote Owens until his toy contract runs its course. A) The genie is out of the bottle after beating Cena. B) Triple H wants (and is in the process) of fast-tracking Owens to the main roster, keeping him in NXT for potentially 5 years is a major blow to that plan.

So, when do they send the DX tank to destroy ROH once and for all?

Yeah this is perfectly reasonable. Another company is making money from one of your hottest stars. I don't really see the issue from a business perspective.

I should point out that WWE actually did this to TNA, when they used Hogan for the WWE All Stars video game during his TNA run.

Is WWE starting to see ROH as potential competition?

Really, all they need to do is make him grow his hair differently and get him more distinct ring gear and the RoH figure becomes as redundant as a bendy surfer Sting figure in 1998. Trying to cut off the talent stream to the bigger indies is a grotesque overreaction and the notion of going back to building talent entirely from scratch again because of it is absurd. They did that before, they ended up hiring then firing hundreds of guys and what do they have to show? Randy Orton, Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger are the biggest names to come through that system and stay with them for the long term, a B- and two C's but for every Ziggler, you have dozens they spent untold amounts of time, effort and money on who went nowhere.

Haha, no. But you don't let someone f*** with your money.

No sane young wrestler would turn down a chance to join ROH, on the slim chance WWE might recruit them from a different indie promotion to make sure they are "merchandise neutral" so to speak

So they're going to try and kill every other organization that's just trying to survive and isn't even direct competition, over merchandising rights?

So they're going to try and kill every other organization that's just trying to survive and isn't even direct competition, over merchandising rights? Looks that way. Once you start telling young wrestlers "It would really hurt your prospects with us if you signed with them", and you're the industry leader, then yeah....it starts to look that way.

They probably have a legit concern regarding the merchandising, but it just seems like a convenient cover for the fact that HHH and the WWE are just a bunch of petty jerks and this is the kind of headline that petty jerks just engage in easily & naturally.

The easy and obvious solution is to tweak Kevin's look. Put a gimmick in his hands, wear a different color t-shirt, and viola! Who is Kevin Steen?

I'm skeptical this will happen. Triple H and company seem to know that ROH is their spot for top guys. They want top guys.

It isn't their money; ROH had the deal first, them's the breaks. And like others said, the ROH figures aren't even competition for them; they won't be sold in the same stores or aimed at the same audience or anything like that. This isn't much different from ROH releasing a best of Kevin Steen DVD as Steen hits it big in WWE; the only difference is Mattel isn't involved with the DVDs, so WWE doesn't get their dander up about that. The much, much, MUCH bigger part of this story, anyway, is the "it's not in your best interest to sign with those guys" angle the write-up is suggesting WWE is putting out there. That's potentially industry-shaking.

The way I read it, it wasn't saying, "hey, sign with ROH and you can just f*** off." The tone was more, "if you are a young worker, know what you are signing and the like because it could affect your availability in the future." Granted, that's still a pretty paranoid stance if these toys aren't even gonna be sold in the same markets but I think that's reasonable. Just seems like more of the "think before you act" mentality that WWE is pushing for prospective talent.
Now, maybe I'm just totally wrong and the tone actually was don't sign with ROH. In that case, I don't agree with it at all.

A lot of people taking this as a much bigger thing than it is re: WWE leaning on the indies. Especially if that post from the F4W board is true, it'll likely make zero difference to anything if Figures lose their rights as soon as the performer leaves ROH. As soon as WWE realise that they probably won't care if a guy's worked for ROH before. And there's no sounder advice in the wrestling industry circa 2015 than 'avoid TNA.'
...Or WWE's planning to secure exclusive use of the Rahway Rec Center and the American Legion in Reseda, take OVW's spot on Kentucky public TV and sign every promising worker currently on the circuit with the unlimited supply of money and roster spots it doesn't have, in spite of the fact they still sign way more non-wrestlers and people with less than two years' indy experience and probably always will. This ain't the territories and it ain't 1985, there's no indy that has dominance over the marketplace in any region like the territories did, everyone everywhere is in WWE's shadow and has been for the last 14 years.
The indies have nothing WWE wants bar the odd wrestler, which they've been periodically picking up throughout the years anyway. Don't forget they once had CM Punk, Bryan Danielson, Low Ki, Chris Hero and Claudio Castagnoli on their books at roughly the same time, way before NXT became what it is now. Picking up top indy talent that they feel could get over with a WWE audience is nothing new, and while NXT is the only place the next generation of talent is being called up from, it'll still only ever be developmental, no matter how much subjectively better or different in tone from the main product it is. Even the rumoured link-up with EVOLVE isn't too different from the developmental relationships they've had with pre-existing indies in the past.
