Following on from the fan theories thread...
I love when people who make a piece of art give enough of a shit about it to paper over the cracks in the storytelling.
In Cheers, Frasier Crane says his father was also a doctor, and is dead - of course, he then shows up in Frasier as an ex-cop.
To the credit of the showrunners for Frasier, they raised this when Woody showed up in an episode as Frasier being mad at his dad after an arugment and lying out of hurt. I love this explanation, it fits with the narrative as their relationship was strained in the early series.
What are some retcons that you particularly enjoyed?
As for least favourite retcons? Depending on how you look at it, the DC relaunch that meant the Ted Kord Blue Beetle had never existed pissed me off so much I've not bought a comic since, but that might be something to type up later on...

favorite:
-Wolverine Origins and X-men 3 never happened
-Grant Morrison decides he's being pointlessly cruel to Animal Man and gives him his family back
least favorite:
-One More Day
-Wally West doesn't exist, then gets replaced with a fraud
-Magneto wasn't Xorn, it was some guy impersonating his brother impersonating Magneto

It was when Sam visited Frasier that he said he was angry at his father so he said he was dead. He also never mentioned having a brother when he was in Boston.

Best: Some may argue that this isn't technically a retcon, since his backstory was never developed beforehand, but revealing Magneto as a survivor of the Nazi concentration camps gave him a new level of complexity that transformed him into one of Marvel's most well known villains.
Worst: "Sins Past". Gwen Stacy got seduced and knocked up by Norman Osborn, bearing two of his children who would in turn age artificially and try and murder Spider-Man. A story so stupid it makes "One More Day" seem like "Kraven's Last Hunt".

Worst = Sandman killed Uncle Ben....but it was just an accident....because he needed money.....for his sick daughter. Get a job, loser!

Least Favourite = New 52 Mr.Freeze and his relationship with Nora. Went from a guy that would do despicable things for the chance to get the love of his life back to just another Batman villain wackjob that needlessly became creepy and unhinged in a rogues gallery that is already filled with that type of villain.

Worst: Hal Jordan and Parallax. Okay, yeah, Hal's heel turn was a little...rushed, but it was pretty momentous that a guy who'd been firmly good (if dumb) over the years became a galactic threat. Trying to kick off the relaunch of his green lantern career with "Oh, he was actually possessed in a moment of weakness" as opposed to "He got old, snapped, and hell broke loose" still seems so wrong even after they established this Rainbow Corps stuff.
Best: No, folks, Rocky V didn't happen. Stallone has spoken. Like Star Trek, it just went from IV to VI. It works so well, because Rocky VI occurs in like, 2006, so Rocky's become kind of a footnote in the biz without fading into complete poverty and irrelevance like in V. They erased a whole movie with little to no damage to the overall plot. THAT's a retcon.

These are all on my least favorite... I'll think a bit on my most favorite... because in general I tend to hate them... though of the New 52 I don't hate Barbara Gordon being Batgirl again... just kinda wish they didn't completely remove the other two from continuity for no real reason...

I like Rocky V, but it's too damn depressing to have remained part of the canon with Rocky losing all his money. I figure that when Adrian died, he sold his mansion and bought a restaurant.

Also, Quicksilver and Scarlett Witch weren't planned to be Magneto's children when they were introduced. That came about later and I wish I could find the article that had the scanned images, but Magneto and Quicksilver didn't always have the same white hairstyle.

I would say having Magneto be the twins' father is another example of a retcon that worked very well.
