As fun as it is to blame it all on the scandal, he changed his swing and had another leg injury around that time. It's interesting because the first time he had an injury/swing change happen was in the early 2000s (I could be wrong on the details, I'm going off of memory). He had a slump and then started kicking ass again. I expected the same this time too, but that ship sailed a long time ago. Of course the scandal had a lot to do with it, but damn.

Gazza's fall was personal rather than professional, so wouldn't count under the OP's criteria. He was still playing top level football into his mid-30s. Also, his fall wasn't swift. His life has spiralled out of control excruciatingly slowly over the last 25 years.

Fernando Torres' fall from grace was pretty swift. Went from being one of the world's best strikers to being a punchline in about as long as it took for the £50m cheque Chelsea paid for him to clear. Granted, he had a bit of success at Chelsea, but was always more of a passenger in that side. And collectively, Leeds United. Champions League semi-finalists in 2001, relegated to the second tier of English football two seasons later, and relegated to the third tier of English football three seasons after that, and almost going out of business in the process. The thing with Torres was he was still rubbish about a year before he signed for Chelsea because he was suffering from injuries. He did nothing in the World Cup even though Spain won it. If Chelsea had brought him in, say, 2008, you could have justified the price tag but by 2010 he was done. Though to be fair he hasn't done too bad at Atletico Madrid, he's still a good player but not a 20-30 goal a season guy any more.

Willie Mays is often held up as the gold standard of it just being sad to watch him in his last few years. Tiger seems to be making a run at that, though.

At that point a fully-fit Torres was still considered a lethal striker and one of the top four or five players in his position in the world. It was only after he joined Chelsea and got free of his injury problems that it became apparent he was a shadow of his former self. In keeping with the Chelsea connection, Andriy Shevchenko never looked half the player he was even six months before at Milan. Again though, he made something of a mini-renaissance at his boyhood club. Man, between the two of them Chelsea paid £81m and let both leave for free. Who'd have thought that at the time?

Tiger hasn't been the same since that celebrity duos tournament where he tried to beat up Bob Barker.
