Wait, so he started out as a promising character but then week-in week-out the storylines got poorer and poorer to the point where they were audience insulting, and eventually his entire run was meaningless with viewers wishing they never laid eyes on him in the first place? Sure sounds like he lived the "Dexter" gimmick to a tee! {Spoiler}It's a terrible show

He had nice feet. A certain TNA plant liked him.

He ran into TNA Booking. He ran into Anderson.
Neutered character. Not much else to do after you cut his legs off. Career Killing feud with the black hole of charisma Anderson. Stupid ass jokes with his same boring mic work. If you have a guy still learning do you really put him in their with Ken Anderson? Plus, the only way that feud could have been salvaged was if he just owned Anderson in their encounters and kept stalking Christy until another more talented wrestler came out to defend her. You could easily have built this 'stalking Christy' up for a long time, made it a long story to the end game.
Keep his apartment. Keep the mystery. Keep mom out of it. Don't make it seem like he's an 8 year old. And you have a guy that's a future talent.
I saw him like a version of Raven. A guy whose character is ridiculously easy to write for.

Hemme should have turned heel. Stupid Gaburick didn't realise that Shaw was getting more over than bully Anderson that was supposed to be a face. They wanted Shaw to win and that is what should have happened.
But even post-Anderson, they could have done stuff with him. I think someone in the TNA higher-ups possibly Gaburick was probably never a fan of him. Compare Ethan Carter for example who's a young man they were always high on and protected over and over and now he became champ to Shaw who had a lot going for him but they treated like bitch too often. And then at some point decided to stop using him and then released him.
That you have a young man with such a promise and interesting character that YOU YOURSELF HELP BUILD and you release him like garbage shows the difference between TNA and the WWE. Cause when the WWE decide to invest in you, they go all the way with it. Even when they f*** up with Bray Wyatt, they never give up cause they recognizes the talent is there. Wyatt may turn into a jobber at some point cause creatively they would have failed but they're gonna try and try and until he connects.

I think it went downhill as soon as Taz started marking out for Sam's judo skills when he was strangling people.

He played the character well but there were two major problems.
1. Shaw is a very limited performer and can't even carry his own weight in the ring half the time. 2. It's TNA so they had to do something incredibly stupid. I don't care what anyone says, that Anderson/Shaw/Hemme feud was the worst of the year, simply because of how little thought was put into what could have been a good story.

Wrestling combined with any character that invokes life-or-death situations is always going to look cartoonish, PG rating or not.

The character had the potential to at least do some really, really bad and hilarious TNA storylines but they didn't even follow through with that. The character was never going to be GOOD in the traditional sense of the word, but at least they could have done some hilariously bad Russo crap with Shaw. I think this stuff was during that era of Impact where it felt like about 25% Russo, where some stuff would be hilariously awful and then other things were just kinda dull. Come on TNA! Russo can lead you to water, but you have to drink.

I find both Ethan Carter and Bram to also be limited performers, most of their stuff they are doing is all character, yet they push them to the moon because they somehow get that the characters works. It was the same with Shaw, I think his stalker/American Psycho character offered something new and fresh. The guy would never have had 5 stars matches but for example when he had that cage match against Anderson, they made in short and it was obvious they booked every moves before hand but it worked in what they wanted to do. That storyline sucked but that match sort of worked, Hell Jerry Lawler made a career out of building his character up even though he could barely do any moves.

The difference between Shaw and all the other guys you mentioned is that they were great workers. They may not have been great technically but they know how to get people invested in their matches and tell a story that people can connect with. Shaw couldn't do that. He's a green performer that simply can't do much. People sat on their hands for literally every Sam Shaw match I've seen with this gimmick.
