And I gotta say, I really don't understand the acclaim for this movie at all. Willem Dafoe was literally the only good thing about it.
The plot was disjointed, but not in an artsy way...it just didn't make much sense. The dialogue was pretty bad. The whole thing felt like a terrible Tarantino flick.
Maybe it was just hyped up too much for me over the years, but I didn't care for it, honestly.

I love how the movie has three stand up comedians in the cast, but only one of them plays a comedic character (Detective Greenly, the inept Boston cop played by Maine-based comedian Bob Marley). Boston-based comedian Jimmy Tingle plays it pretty straight as a priest (even if he is stuck in a fairly comedic situation of hearing Smecker's confession while held on gunpoint by Rocko). And Billy Connolly plays a complete bad ass in the form of Il Duce!
There's a great documentary on the wild ride The Boondock Saints went from the hottest script in Hollywood to direct to video cult favorite called Overnight.

Yeah, it's one of those movies that's better when you're in high school. The two best parts of the movie are Il Duce and Willem Dafoe's character. Pretty much the rest of the protagonists I find insufferable nowadays.

Pretty much the rest of the protagonists I find insufferable nowadays. I will admit that Il Duce was fairly cool, though that was probably helped by the fact that I love Billy Connolly in general. And Willem Dafoe was predictably fantastic. It's just everything else about the movie that did nothing for me whatsoever.

It does have a few pretty classic moments, especially the bit about needing a rope.

In 1999, this movie was pretty hot shit, but I can pretty easily see how it wouldn't hold up. Plus its definitely one of those films you have to watch a VERY specific time in your development as a person for it to really resonate.

It's a lot of fun, but it's definitely a cheesefest. Some tend to act like it's more than that, which is weird.

For me, it's definitely been talked up as something really deep and meaningful, which I suppose you could attribute to the courtroom scene, but even that was pretty average. It was worth watching for the bit where Dafoe's character is walking the other police through what happened at the scene and he's there alongside the brothers. That was pretty neat. Best scene in the movie by a country mile.

I feel the same way about Natural Born Killers to an extent, despite everyone loving it. The director's cut is far better than the theatrical release as I've seen both. The director's cut is far more linear in story. It's the XPW to Pulp Fiction's ECW, as soon as I saw Pulp Fiction after The Boondock Saints, I found out that Troy Duffy was one of the many knockoff Tarantino-clones.

It's a lot of fun, but it's definitely a cheesefest. Some tend to act like it's more than that, which is weird. That is how I usually look at it for the most part. Don't get me wrong, it has that whole cheese factor and I found some parts funny and thrilling, like the shootout with the two brothers hanging upside down and blasting those mobsters away. However, I remember years ago, I saw how it gained cult status to the point where we saw T-shirts being sold, whether it's the one with the two brothers holding their guns, or the pendants of the chain with the Celtic cross or even one with the prayer written on it. I own both this film and the sequel on Blu Ray, but I still have yet to watch the extended cut of the sequel to that movie. I remember I saw the sequel, in theaters no less, before seeing its predecessor. They're entertaining movies. I can see that. But I don't really buy into the cult status that it had gained, but then again, it seemed more popular among emo types than anything, along with The Nightmare Before Christmas, or Health Ledger's Joker, I could go on.
