I'm not buying this is a legit botch. Both guys go out and the different brands' refs immediately choose their guy and do the hand raising thing to the crowd?
Vince tearing his quads out was a botch... But I think this ending was planned. Thoughts?
**EDIT** Just listened to a Jericho interview and he says this ending was not planned and Cena was supposed to win. So why change the ending on a whim like that especially when Cena was getting the bigger pops?""

The ending is the same though they both ended up going to Wrestlemania to face their brands champion and won.
If it was a botch then they did a great job covering it up but they both fell and landed at the exact same time so its very hard to dispute that oh Batista won or Cena won

Batista was more over than Cena actually. However, when Tista was injured he cooled off. Coupled with being older than Triple H, and perhaps worried about longevity they went with Cena and clearly made the right choice.
I think Brock broke Vince's heart and he wanted to make sure he had a huge star for a long, long time.

As I understand it Batista was always scheduled to win, but slipped over the top rope when he was meant to hold on (leading to the restart).
I think that was Batista's account anyway. Think it was in his book but I may be getting mixed up with where I saw it.
I take your point about how quick an ad lib it was for the referees to each declare a different winner, but the reason I believe it was a botch is:
1. why would Batista claim it to be a botch if it wasn't? It is not really something you would lie about unless you were claiming it wasn't a botch when it was.
2. how clinically and quickly Batista throws Cena out on he restart. It did not feel like a thought through epic finish at all.

It's close enough where they can claim the same time gimmick, but Batista does hit first.

Both guys go out and the different brands' refs immediately choose their guy and do the hand raising thing to the crowd? Except that's not what happened. Watch it again. The Smackdown refs' immediate reaction is to say that Cena hit first due to Batista being the planned winner. A few seconds later, the Raw refs raise Batista's hand and then the Smackdown refs (either getting a message in their earpieces or doing excellent improvising) start raising Cena's.

There's no way Cena was winning. Batista had to win to make the story with Triple H work. And he was more over than Cena at the time and in a bigger story. And facing Triple H. Jericho's talking shit, as usual.

You can see the one Smackdown ref come up, then backs off and asks Charles Robinson, "He landed first? Okay." Then, they push Cena in the ring and that same ref goes in the ring to raise his hands. Also, I imagine if it was planned, they would have had Vince's music cued instead of him just walking out. Not to mention why would he be that upset if they planned the spot? He throws his jacket and is screaming at everybody in the ring because they just blew a huge spot on one of the biggest events of the year.

The refs have earpieces. It's easy.

You can see all the refs initially go to Big Dave to raise his hand, then after 3 seconds all the Smackdown refs went to Cena

Its amazing how a botched not supposed to be a tie finish looked way better than the worked tie finish with Bret and Lex.

It'd be really strange if Cena was planned to win.
You can easily arrive at Cena/JBL at mania (and they did). Batista/HHH needs Batista to win the Rumble to make the story though. Could have been done without it but it'd be really clunky.
As for it being a botch, it definitely looks like one. You'd think if there was a rumble restart for something like 2 people hitting at the same time, they'd go at it for a few more minutes, tease some finishers etc. Instead Batista just collars Cena and tosses him out which begs the question "What was the point to begin with?"
Also it's certainly not like there was some difference in pops when they were testing crowd reactions that would warrant a change of plans in the winner.

It gave us the greatest run-in of all times. Vince destroying BOTH of his quads and no solding it then barking his orders while sitting on the ring is unintentional comedy at his very best.

The irony is that just calling it a draw would have worked perfectly this time
