Bro, DiBiase (88/89) and Perfect (early 90, late 92) were totally main eventers at times Okay, fair enough with Dibiase. But when did Perfect main event?

I can't agree about Triple H at all. He's been hyped beyond his worth for well over a decade but I maintain his 2000 is the best calendar year any wrestler has ever had. In 99-01 he was absolutely deserving of his top spot. I just never thought of him as a main eventer. I remember even back in 1999 when he got his big push, I just remember thinking why is this guy becoming a main eventer? I would have preferred Shamrock or Owen getting the main event spot in 98/99. True, he did have a big year back in 2000, but I admit I would change the channel a lot of the time to WCW whenever he was on. HHH just never could hold my interest much except for some of his matches. I liked him most in the 97-98 time frame since he was right where he should be on the card in my opinion. In 2000 he had some pretty good matches. But from 2002 on, he was just terrible to watch except for matches he had with guys that were a lot better than him.

Owen, Bulldog & Dibiase never won the title so in my opinion they don't count even if they main evented a few PPVs here & there. By that criteria then there was only three or four main eventers period between 1984-1991. Unlike the last ten years, when everybody in the upper midcard and up got a run as world champion, back in the day you had guys who main evented PPVs, TV, and house shows for years and never got their hands on the top title. Similarly, The Miz and Jack Swagger have the same number of world titles as Ultimate Warrior, but only a fool would say they're equals in terms of status.

At his peak, Triple H was as good as anyone else in the industry.

Of course Miz & Swagger aren't on same status as someone like the Warrior. Warrior was the second biggest draw of the 80s through the early 90s. Yeah, I understand that things were different back then. But when you think of Dibiase, Bulldog, or Owen I don't think most fans would consider them main eventers unless they really think hard about it. Dibiase I guess you can count as one though since he did main event all 3 PPVs in 1988. But I think one of the main things people remember is that he never held the world title. I just think holding the title shows that you are the guy the company wants to invest in as the main attraction, even if it's just for a little while. Usually the ones that don't hold the title are in main event matches here & there but aren't really considered main eventers. Main eventers from 84-91 to me would be: Hogan, Warrior, Savage, Andre, Piper, Dibiase (I count him since as said he did main event all the PPVs.), Taker, & Slaughter. I guess Bundy would be as well for a little while. 92-96 the main eventers were: Bret, Luger, Flair, Hogan, Taker, Sid, Backlund, Yokozuna, HBK, & Diesel.

A majority of the time he worked with guys that were better than him. So, what does that say about him?

That in late '99, throughout most of '00 if not all the way up to his injury in '01, he was the most hated heel in the company, and having wall to wall great matches. Whether you want to say he was shit in the ring or not (something I disagree with anyway), it's not like he was Great Khali levels. He was a champion with so much heat that people were cheering for Taka Michinoku to beat him, they were popping for Earl Hebner shoving him, cheering Tazz getting him in the Tazzmission, and Jericho's phantom win got a monumental pop despite Jericho having been directionless for eight months to that point. There was no more effective heel in the WWF that entire time.

Angle, Jericho, Austin, Rock, Taker, Foley were bigger draws & better workers. When has Triple H ever helped elevate anyone to the next level as a main eventer with the exception of Batista mainly due to them being good friends. Benoit got over on his own through his wrestling skills. Cena was already the main draw for a year when HHH put him over. To put it best when did Triple H bring a guy to the next level like Bret did with Austin, or Foley with Triple H & to an extent The Rock in late 98 & early 99?

Honestly, I hate when people say Ted Dibiase SHOULD have been a main eventer. He freaking main evented a Wrestlemania, literally the most main event thing you can do in the wrestling business.

Well, I changed my opinion about him a bit as a main eventer since he did main event all the PPVs in 1988. But most of the time if you never held a world title than it's hard to be considered a main eventer. Very few exceptions.

I kinda dispute Angle being a bigger draw than Triple H, and the idea of Rock being a better worker than Triple H is just laughable. Rock's always been more the charisma guy than he's ever been about his wrestling. In fact, I'd give Trips a slight edge over Taker in ring. We're all entitled to our opinions, though. My "should haves" would be William Regal, Marcus Cor Von, and Christian, my "shouldn't haves" would be Alberto Del Rio (just ugh) and Kane. I never thought Kane was much more than a side attraction, but the idea of Kane main eventing PPVs in the 2010s is just bizarre.

As far as current guys go. I'm shocked that Damien Sandow and Cody Rhodes aren't main eventers right now.

I'd probably put them at even in terms of drawing power, but Angle was definitely the better in ring worker. Also, I always preferred The Rocks' in ring style over HHH. I just liked his fast paced style over HHHs slower style. And the way The Rock took bumps for his opponents was awesome. I think HHH was a better in ring worker than Takers older work. But from 2002 to the present Taker is the better in ring performer in my opinion. I think Regal should have been a main eventer as well. He pretty much ruined that for himself in 2008 though when he tested positive for drugs. Vince loves Kane so it's not surprising Kane had a long run with the title later in his career. I had no problem with it though.

There's a quote from (I think) Jim Cornette that sums up Triple H pretty well. "He's a 9 who's pushed as a 10 so hard that everyone thinks he's a 7."
Anyway, to answer the thread title
Should have: William Regal MVP John Morrison
Shouldn't have: The Great Khali The Miz

People were CLAMORING for HHH to take his place in the main event back in 1999. To argue otherwise just ain't true.
And keep in mind, I'm not talking individual opinions here, so as to avoid the: "I'VE never like him..." thing. But the majority, especially on the internet that would eventually hate him, were ready for him to main event.

Also on the list of "should haves": Rick Rude. He main evented WWF in 1990 and WCW for a few years after that.

I didn't start watching until 2001, but HHH immediately became my least favorite wrestler and has remained so until this day. Not as a good heel, just in a "go away, you're boring" way.

Also in the 80s/90s, No World Title certainly did not mean "not a main eventer"
Otherwise you'd be saying Andre the Giant and Rowdy Roddy Piper weren't Main Eventers and that is just ludicrous.
