What are some early matchups involving opponents that have been eclipsed by later matchups involving them? One of the earliest has to be Bret Hart vs Shawn Michaels on Wrestling Challenge in 1990. Any other notable examples?

How about Ambrose/RVD for the U.S. Title. I don't remember the show, but I remember thinking it should have made the main show.

Bret and Austin at Survivor Series 1996 was a brilliant match that was overshadowed by the Mania match.
Foley and Taker had a great feud two years before the historic Hell in a Cell match.
The British Bulldog and Warlord faced off at Wrestlemania 7 before their classic at Tuesday in Texas.

I'm not sure if this is notable or not, but HHH vs. Undertaker happened on the go home of Fully Loaded 99, with the #1 Contendership at stake.
It ended in a no contest when Austin and Rock interfered, Austin locked Undertaker in a bloodmobile (how do you lock someone inside a car?), and Austin busted open Vince with a title belt, and Taker made Austin bleed with a beer can.

It probably says something for how great MITB 2011 was that the CM Punk/John Cena match that became the Nexus Riot counts there (especially because before the Riot, it also was a very good match.)

Austin and Undertaker have numerous memorable matches, but they had a completely throwaway (albeit good) main event match at IYH: Cold Day in Hell in 1997. I think they purposefully brushed that under the rug so they could book SummerSlam 1998 as a never before seen epic clash.

John Cena vs. Randy Orton happened for the first time at the Eddie Guerrero Memorial Raw 2005 Kinda on topic, but this same show had Rey Mysterio vs. Shawn Michaels. Did they ever have a match against each other after this?

Joe vs. Punk 1. Same scenario, same 60 minute draw, completely eclipsed by the latter.

(how do you lock someone inside a car?) its because they always bought cheap crappy cars, like the limo Undertaker used to kidnap Stephanie

Joe vs. Punk 1. Same scenario, same 60 minute draw, completely eclipsed by the latter. i'd go with the original Joe vs. Punk I from 2003. their series is often talked about as the full trilogy, and the first match playing a large role in their second. the match from 2003 most people don't even know exists (same with their match in PWG)

Any other notable examples? Bret/Shawn at Survivor Series 1992 was also a good match. Weird to think it headlined the show. You can almost consider that match to be the beginning of "New Generation" and their 1997 match book ending the "New Generation".
