Some of these are easy - Ric Flair had to be the world champion to maintain his jet flying, limousine riding lifestyle. Randy Savage wanted to prove that he was the most macho man in the world. The Iron Sheik represented the Iranians. Hulk Hogan fought for the rights of every man. J-E-Double F, J-A Double-R-E Double T wanted to use wrestling make a name for himself so he could make it in country music.
Can you think of more?
Is this kind of clear-cut motivation disappearing from wrestling? Is it important?

TL Hopper: I guess plumbing couldn't pay the bills...
Erick Rowan: The drought prevented his wine crops from achieving full growth, so he had to turn to wrestling to make ends meet.

Most today grew up watching Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart matches and want to be like them.
.....That wasn't the point of this thread, was it?

No, but it can easily be brought back, because on the contrary, the whole "I'm just a lifelong fan of pro wrestling just like all of you and I worked all my life to make this dream happen" is so big a part of a lot of people's kayfabe "reasoning" now that it's inadvertantly come back.

Mahabali Sheera kept being touched on the street and he had to show the world that they couldn't do that.

It was actually supposed to be a joke post based on what you described being pretty prevalent these days.

Sorry - That was pretty good, but I won't be ready for jokes until page 2 I think it would actually be a good gimmick.

I thought this was going to a critique about why chickenshit heels are wrestlers in the first place.

Because they're big and strong but weren't good enough to make it to the big leagues of the sport they played in school.

I would be really interested to hear the kayfabe reasoning behind some of the more outlandish characters, like Papa Shango, Doink, or IRS. Even the Undertaker, for that matter.

Kevin Steen [Owens] is just trying to pay the bills for his family.
Stevie Richards wants to show you...you'll see!
Hardcore Holly wasn't a very good racecar driver and hedged his bets.
