It seems to me that the obvious thing to do would be to have had had Cena lift Stewart for the AA, tease hitting in, then put him down, saying something like, "I don't do business that way," and leave the ring. Only for Flair to say, "I do!" kick Stewart in the groin, and apply the Figure Four.
But making your baby-kissing hero assault a retiree...that's fine, too.

This whole thing was convoluted, even for The E. This is Russo level stuff.

John Cena gets more and more unbearable every time he's on screen
Every time I think that's impossible he proves me wrong...

Somebody in the RAW thread made a good point. The only way Cena could have made himself look any more like a jerk would have been to say "Make a wish" before AA-ing Jon.

You can't book Cena like Steve Austin, it just doesn't work

It was weird.
John addressed Stewart, explained that he understood his reasoning, and then pointed out why said reasoning was flawed and actually caused more hurt than help. Stewart realized his error, apologized, and went to shake John Cena's hand...
John Cena then assaulted Jon Stewart while the commentary team told us the older non-wrestler deserved it for what he had done...the thing John Cena had not more than two minutes ago said that he understood and 'accepted.'
That's...I don't get it.

So, they gave away Cena getting his revenge on Jon Stewart the night after. I mean, I see why they rushed it. Jon Stewart has a lot of obligations and has to juggle them all before he can commit himself to.....oh wait.

The only saving grace for this angle is if it finally leads to a Cena heel turn, otherwise its a waste. Id love to see Cena obsession with the record taking him to the darkside.

Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. And I don't even like Cena.
If he hadn't done anything to Stewart, people would be saying "Typical Cena. Gets screwed out of the title and he just no-sells it".

I really enjoy psychotic WWE Universe member Jon Stewart who can't bear to let any of WWE's kayfabe and has decided to fight for every last bit of it. Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. And I don't even like Cena. If he hadn't done anything to Stewart, people would be saying "Typical Cena. Gets screwed out of the title and he just no-sells it". He should have got Jon Stewart where it hurts, let him know that he and The Rock were actually friends the whole time!

I really loved the part where Jon would start saying something and Cena would cut him off.
That was great.
And totally not obnoxious.

The problem was that they had to have Cena do something to warrant getting thrown out of the building, so he wouldn't crash the statue ceremony later.
If they actually did something interesting by having him show a heel side, it's probably not going to amount to anything.

My issue was one of the biggest heels of all time basically saying:
"I was pulling for John Cena! My record has to broken eventually and who better than the beautiful, multi talented, best person who ever lived to do it.. Oh I do love John Cena. I wish I was more like him!"

The whole thing with Stewart is dumb when the only reason he is really involved is because he didn't like that Rollins cheated his way to the top . So he made a big deal out of that but had no problems helping him cheat to win again?! I know there is some logic as he is a mark for Flair but seriously Flair has done stuff ten times worse than anything Rollins has done as a heel...so why would Stewart be so bothered by Rollins being a dick in the first place?!
Then Cena basically assaults a middle aged guy with zero wrestling experience (and whose kids probably idolize Cena) who genuinely admitted what he did was wrong but at the same time had a sort of logical explanation which clearly showed he was a legit lifelong mark fan of dis bizness who didn't really know better. That's also not too long after they ran a pretty cool segment about how awesome he is at granting wishes to sick children.
I mean c'mon!

I think it'd have sufficed if all he did was come out pissed off, state his case, intimidate Stewart a bit, threaten him, then leave with the warning that if he ever gets in his way again he won't hold back. Shows he's angry without having him beat up a civilian in his 50s.

Stewart cost him the heavyweight title and tying the record. That's a HUGE deal. My biggest problem is I didn't think he was angry ENOUGH. Go out there steaming at absolutely wreck Stewart. None of this "You did what you thought was right" nonsense. Who made Jon Freakin' Stewart arbiter of the universe, protector of records? You cost a dude the heavyweight title! You deserve an ass kicking not attempts to rationalize it.

You deserve an ass kicking not attempts to rationalize it. The problem was that in order to write him out of the last segment, they wanted to have him pull an Austin-esque "Hahaha, OK, fine, I'll let it go, NOPE! I'M GONNA BEAT YOU UP ANYWAY!", with the "bonus" that it'd get them media attention (TMZ, E!, etc.) due to having an outside TV personality involved. WWE can't decide whether they want Cena to be 80s Hogan (The Hero to Children Everywhere), Austin (Ornery, will attack anything that moves at the slightest motivation), or Rock (Verbally runs everyone down, cocky to the end), and they have him cycle between the three. Even if they don't want to turn him heel, it's time to have him start to show signs of cracking under the pressure of trying to be everything to WWE, and have the announcers acknowledge it.
