And they do the deal in enemy territory. New South Wales go up 1-0 with a strong 28-4 win, their biggest winning margin in Queensland.

State Of Origin Game 2 about to start. New South Wales are unchanged from Game 1, Queensland with Slater, Thurston, Holmes, Cooper, Wallace, Hess and Glasby in for O'Neill, Milford, Oates, Thaiday, Guerra, Myles and Lillyman.
The Blues win here, that's the series wrapped up with one game to spare.

And Queensland with the comeback and the win. A late try takes the series to Game 3, 18-16 the score.

One of my favourites has announced his retirement. Hawthorn's Luke Hodge will hang up the boots at the end of the year. Hawthorn have revived their season and there is a slim chance they can make the finals. If they don't it's likely his last match will be in the final round against the Bulldogs. Will post his accomplishments when he officially finishes. He will play his 300th match this weekend against Geelong on Saturday. Which I will miss cause I'm moving house

Only a few minutes away from the State Of Origin series decider between New South Wales and Queensland. The Blues are unchanged from Game 2, making it the first time they've kept the same 17 for all three games of the series since 1996. Queensland have a couple of forced injury changes, with Munster a direct replacement for Thurston and Hunt to join the bench with Morgan going into the starting team for the injured Boyd.

And that's ballgame. Queensland take out the series for the... shit, I've lost count now... They've only lost the series once for a long-ass time. 22-6 the final score.

I have a few super basic questions about AFL team ownership. It's a weirdly big part of the project I'm working on, and I want to get it right.
1. American-style private ownership (e.g. The Rooney Family and the Steelers; Jerry Jones and the Cowboys) doesn't seem to be a thing. Does the league operate on a strict US public broadcasting model (corporate sponsors combined with donations), or is there something I'm missing?
2. I keep running into stories on how the prospect of private ownership was "ruined forever" by former Swans owner Geoffrey Edelsten. What exactly did he, or didn't he, do? (He comes off as a huge scumbag, so he most likely "did" a lot.)
3. I noticed that each of the clubs have a president, CEO and/or chairman. Who exactly appoints these people? Is it the league?
4. How exactly does revenue sharing between the clubs work?

Another one my favorites has announced his retirement. 2003 Rising Star winner, Brownlow Medalist, Premiership Captain, Former Hawthorn player and current West Coast Eagle Sam Mitchell has said he will wrap it up at seasons end. West Coast is 9th on the ladder at the time of this post, so there is still a good chance they will make the finals. So his last game will be a final most likely.
He will then move into coaching. As was the plan when he moved west.
Edit: fellow West Coast Brownlow medalist Matt Priddis has also said this season will be his last.
Edit in yo edit: I have been mistaken. It's just Priddis that's announced his retirement. Not Mitchell. Apparently an assumption has made an ass out of me and the football media and I just butchered that saying.

Big news day with 4 rounds of the regular season to go.
St Kilda great Nick Riewoldt will end his 16 year career at the end of the season. The Saints have been struggling recently but there is still a chance they can make the finals.
Geelong's Patrick Dangerfield has been suspended for a match for a dangerous sling tackle. Unless he challenges and is successful he is now ineligible to win the Brownlow Medal which he was favourite to go back to back. Richmond's Dustin Martin is now favourite to win.

Parramatta are closing out the NRL season with a wet sail (and hopefully a legally-financed roster), as six straight wins have pretty much cemented their first appearance in playoff rugby league since 2009.

AFL
Rodney Eade has been sacked as the coach of the Gold Coast Suns. The Suns improved slightly, but not enough and are still a bit of an embarrassment for the AFL.
Dean Solomon will fill in as caretaker coach for the last three rounds. While they will look for the next coach at the end of the season.
Who could possibly want this job?

The worst thing is that if they just go with Solomon then they're just going to repeat the same problems by making him head coach when he was an assistant coach under their past two failures. What they need to do is find an unknown that's seeking an opportunity but is in a successful system. Basically they need to find a Luke Beveridge or Alistair Clarkson.

Well this coming Sunday I'm going to see the Warriors play (and most likely lose badly) against the Canberra Raiders.

Couple of notable AFL retirements:
Former Geelong and current Giant player Mr Sunscreen Steve Johnson will retire at seasons end. Maybe ending with another Premiership win to his name.
Essendon second generation player and 2012 Brownlow winner Jobe Watson will also end his career at the end of Essendon's season. It's obvious he has struggled to readapt after returning from his year long suspension.
Also Collingwood's Jesse White has retired.... yeah him.

It was quite a sad sight seeing them play today as the Stadium was mostly empty and they got their asses handed to them by the raiders.

Big year for retirements in the AFL. Two all time greats have said this year will be their last
Robert Murphy of the Western Bulldogs will see out the year. There is still hope the Doggies can repeat what they did last year, but they need to secure a top 8 spot (at time of post they are currently outside the 8). Of course Bob cruelly missed out on the Dogs Grand Final win last year due to a long term knee injury.
Josh Gibson of Hawthorn and formerly North Melbourne has retired effective immediately as it looks like he won't recover in time to get a farewell game. A key backman for the Hawks. Won two Hawthorn best and fairest awards.. both in Premiership years.
Seeing the Hawks v Bulldogs next Friday.. could be an emotional night.

We have a new NRL record for fastest time before the first try of the match has been scored. Thanks to a poorly-advised offload from Brisbane's Adam Blair on the first tackle of the game, Parramatta's Kirisome Auva'a scored in a blistering 13 seconds.
