"Deus Ex: Mankind Divided has given us one of the most grotesque pre-order schemes in "AAA" history. Its "Augment Your Pre-order" plan is a blight on the industry, and the worst part is that it's just another development in a long and sad story. Pre-order culture is the worst. It seeps into everything. It needs to be sucked out." (LANGUAGE WARNING) www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7EI9YCsuBQ

Pre-order incentives can go f*** themselves as far as I'm concerned, so I pretty much agree with every word he said.

Serious question: Are the freebies for preordering available otherwise? Even if I have to pay for them?

It's stupid, but I kinda feel like I'm being punished for not blindly handing over money for a game before anybody even plays it, or hell sometimes even sees it.
I have not bought games because I didn't want to pay extra for the preorder bonus a year after the game released. I'm a completionist. Yes, missing that one outfit would drive me mad.

Well, I guess I really meant the "play as Ultimate Warrior!" on a wrestling game or "Play as the 86 Bears" Or, "Preorder today and play as the Terminator"

Well, I guess I really meant the "play as Ultimate Warrior!" on a wrestling game or "Play as the 86 Bears" Or, "Preorder today and play as the Terminator" In-game preorder incentives are almost always released as DLC later. Stuff like statuettes, books, soundtracks, etc. tend to be available too, but varies.

I don't play video games so maybe someone can clear this up for me...
Why would you pay an extra amount of money, ANY extra amount of money, for an 'add-on' to a game that you haven't played yet and don't know if it's any good? How do you not know this game is going to be the next Aliens: Colonial Marines?

You put down the cost of the game (online usually only charges when the game ships). The season pass is kinda pre-ordering DLC... which is sorta like paying extra money for add-on's though.

How do you not know this game is going to be the next Aliens: Colonial Marines? You don't pay extra money for pre-orders. It's a deposit that's counted towards the total cost of purchase (say, a game costs $60 and you plunk down $5 for a pre-order; when the game comes out you pay $55 as you've already paid $5 towards the cost). The bonuses are freebies. The game could be absolute garbage but then I only preorder games I know I'm going to buy Day 1. Pre-order bonuses are a nice little incentive towards that, though the whole practice of different stores giving out different, exclusive bonuses pisses me off. The new Deus Ex's attempt sounds pretty rancid, too.

The kind of practices you highlight, particularly dividing different bonuses between different retailers is absolutely repugnant in my eyes. Now this new practice of taking the crowdfunding model and using it to drive up preorders is about as shameless a cash grab as you can get.

I agree but they tend to do it on games they know will end up reaching whatever top level thing they set it at regardless... though I literally laughed out loud that the "ultimate" prize was playing a whole 4 days earlier.

It's so odd because early access is just a given with some games, especially MMO's. Like Final Fantasy XIV Heavensward let you do this just for preordering the game, period.

I've long stopped pre-ordering non-Nintendo AAA releases(I still pre-order Nintendo's because, well, who knows how well those will be stocked? I mean just a year after release Pikmin 3 was damn near impossible for me to find in my city.....).
In general I tend to only pre-order the niche Japanese games nowadays, because those tend to always have low print runs and more times than not if I miss getting it at launch I tend to miss my chance at getting a physical copy of the game before its price balloons on the second-hand market, especially on places like Amazon and eBay.
