While the show is giving people plenty to gripe about at the moment (as ever), there's at least a decent consensus about one thing. Most people right now find the New Day to be the gleaming light of positivity in the WWE, quite a turn around from when they were considered to be one of the worst parts of the show at the start of the year. As midcard acts go, I think they're one of the most entertaining in years, and if you look at other midcard acts that have floundered, I think there's something that can be learned from them.
Take Zack Ryder for example. Now there were a looot of reasons why Ryder had his descent from popularity, and a lot of them weren't his fault, but it didn't help his case that at the end of the day, once Ryder had said woo woo woo and told you to take care and spike your hair once, you had kind of gotten everything there was to be had from his gimmick. I think what made a lot of people turn against him after the Kane stuff was the fact that every attempt of his to come back was the exact same thing as before, give or take a new haircut or too. Emma's main roster call up was a damp squib, not because she's a bad performer but because she did the same dance and the same tag match with Santino against Fandango and Summer Rae every week. Adam Rose's entourage was amazing the first time it showed up, but it was kind of clear that there wasn't much else to him apart from that before he'd even gotten a full time call-up, and that didn't even take very long. Even if you look at the whole Damien Mizdow business, again the guy got screwed but even though it was crazy not to give him a big win over the Miz, in truth, hadn't the whole act petered out and gotten repetitive months before?
I think a big thing that's helped the New Day succeed is that they're constantly adding to the act. First there was the clapping, then the ring side smack talk, then the dancing, then the trombone and lately the "save the tables" petition. They haven't rested on their laurels with any one thing and the reason there's a fan buzz about them right now is because people want to see what they do next. That sounds like such a basic, obvious thing to have in your show but it's one of the main reasons there's a predominant air of negativity around WWE, because we're always pretty sure what's going to happen next.
So midcarders (and the people writing them) take note. Variety is the spice of life, and even if you've found something that's gotten over with the crowd, keep trying new things, because you can grow stale much quicker than you might think.
