I'm going on vacation in a couple days and I'm going to follow a routine that is admired by some, criticized by others. I'm a nomad and I try not to stay in one city for more than a day. I end up seeing a lot this way, but it also requires a lot of driving as a result. For example, I'm going to be hunting for lighthouses near the Great Lakes. In Michigan in particular, I'll probably be driving five or six hours per day.
Some people tell me this is a great way to see different parts of the country. Others tell me its a waste of a vacation to be stuck in the car so many hours per day.
Thoughts?

Go exploring. If that's what you like to do, then it's not a wasted vacation. Besides that, you'll get to see a lot of cool little towns. 6 hours a day driving is a bit much for me, but I still love exploring like that.

I hate being active and exploring when it's forced out of some sense of "Well, we're here, so we NEED to be doing something, right? " If it's organic, then it's cool. I was absolutely content to laze about Tokyo, having a drink, eating, and just reading a good book rather than forcing things to happen like that's the way to be. When I did go out and explore it was much more memorable and enjoyable, as it came spur of the moment. It was midnight and I stepped out for a smoke and thought everything looked beautiful so I wanted to see more. That was a really good time. If where you're at or what you're doing is so boring that you need to fill it with a bunch of random, touristy, meaningless shit to do, then maybe it's not so hot of a vacation destination. I'm not directing that towards you, of course. What you're doing is different and it sounds fine enough to me. More like the people I've traveled with in the past and prevailing notions in general that people seem to have about vacations and "how" to do them. I've had some people tell me that what I did sounded like a waste but I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

I've had some people tell me that what I did sounded like a waste but I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I hear what you're saying. In my case, nothing I do is exactly just for the sake of it. It's actually planned out for the most part and I tend to do all the driving because I want to see everything. Last year, I went to New England and I logged about 1,350 miles of driving over one week. Yes, it was exhausting, but I knew it would be ambitious and I at least got to see different parts of the area. And for what it's worth, I don't drive five or six hours straight. A lot of it is stop and go. Being a lighthouse enthusiast, I drive an hour or two, stop at a lighthouse in the middle of nowhere, drive another hour, see another lighthouse, etc. I'm sorta collecting sites.

Bit of column A, bit of column B for me.
During the day I like to go out and explore, than at night just chill out in me hotel room.
That's the plan anyway when I go to Hong Kong in November.

Nothing fun about spending money and then just sitting in the hotel room. I can do that at home.
That was my mentality as a kid. I wanted to stay in the hotel since I didn't have cable. Nowdays, I want to get as much bang for my buck as possible.

If I'm off work all I wanna do is stay in bed, watch TV, and play video games.

When we're on vacation, the wife and I go to grocery stores. I'm serious. Those keyring cards are like stickers on an old timey briefcase. (I currently have 18.) You can learn a lot about a city by walking around a supermarket.

Give me a beach or a pool. I'm a beach baby. I won't lie, I wanna look at the bikini (or less) chicks with beautiful scenery.
So, that might fit B. I'll walk about the beach. So, there's A.

Stay in one spot, then go explore the nearby and surrounding area. I don't really like scheduled activities, but I tend to vacation by beaches or rivers rather than metro areas. So the moment I feel a certain trail looks neat to hike, the water looks refreshing for a nice swim, the fish appear to be biting, or that rock formation is too tall for me not to climb it etc., I've found my next activity.

Be active and explore.
I usually plan ahead what I'm going to do each day and night so I'm sure to fit in everything that I want to see and do. When I go to a new place I want to see and do as many different things as possible. When I was younger, my families holidays tended to be the "stay in one place" variety, chiefly the beach in Spain or France and although I enjoyed them, I always found myself getting restless.
Saying that, I do tend to stay in just one city/area because I usually dislike public transport. Like when I went to Sri Lanka, I tended to visit the attractions/places near where I was staying rather than getting on a bus/train for 6 hours to go somewhere else in the country.

I'd rather go see things I've never seen before then laze around on a beach for a week. I don't mind the beach for a couple of days maybe but I know I'd get bored with the typical holidays people from the U.K take which is usually cheap beach or sitting by the pool holidays in Spain, Turkey, Egypt etc.
In the evenings I'm not big on nightclubs and stuff like that a good meal is enough for me or doing anything connected with sport (I'll always try and catch an Arsenal game if I can because I guess I'm addicted)

Sitting at home, watching TV, with my feet in one of those vibrating foot spas with various oils added to the water.

I'd say in general I'm an adventurer. I like to go to cities with a lot of cultural stuff going on and spend my days in museums, visiting monuments, finding cool places to eat, walking around seeing the sights, etc. I've never been on a package holiday in the sun type dealy where people tend to just sunbathe on the beach - I think that would get boring for me after a day or two.

I hate vacations, they are more stressful than staying home.
Also, I'm not much for "seeing things". I believe the photos of the Eiffel Tower, Mount Rushmore, and the Grand Canyon are real. I don't really give a shit about spending a bunch of money to see them in person.
Give me a couch, some medicinal herbs, some good comics, good tv, and my wife and I'm a happy guy.
