I've always heard it was because Jesse was already under a lot of scrutiny for doing the show, period, so him raising the bad Guy's hand in victory would have made it a lot worse, so they allowed Mick to play the stop gap. At least Mick got a USA Today cover out of it. Considering how little of a shit the main stream media gives about wrestling, EVEN AT THAT TIME, I have a hard time believing that him raising the heel's hand in victory was going to make a difference. It's not like Matt Lauer was going to go on air the next morning and say, "HOW COULD HE RAISE THE HAND OF THAT DASTARDLY TRIPLE H?!" As I understand it, Austin didn't want to give up the belt to Triple H, so Mankind's entry into the match was the compromise. Maybe if Triple H wore one of those sweet sweatsuits Austin would have done the job.

I wondered why it was that Chyna got dropped from the Main Event altogether? I've heard rumours they gave her the choice of being made champion or doing Playboy, Austin didn't want to job to her, it all being a stunt from Russo to get TV viewers, which one is closest to the truth. Part of me honestly wanted to see WWE go ahead and make her champion just to see what would have happened. I'm fairly certain that rumor about Chyna, the title, and Playboy is something Chyna created herself a little while back.

Austin was supposed to face Chyna in the match originally, but the bigger story was that she was allegedly planned to WIN. Austin changed his mind on the idea not long before and Mankind was thrown into the match.
Can you imagine the press they would have gotten, had she won, though?
