His language trouble may have helped Lita, she could have been brought in as a valet but having to act as Essa Rios' interpreter meant she got move involved in his matches and stood out more.
'Essa Rios' also made up 67% of Edge and Christians Spanish vocabulary when they played Los Conquistadors.

He's only 36! He should have learnt English when asked, or at least tried. That means he would have only been 19 when he came in in 98. If that's not the youngest person ever on a Mania card, he's got to be close/ Sounds about right. I remember when he was at Mania 14 as Aguila they said he was 18 or 19.

I liked his corner plancha a lot and the amazing moonsault he'd do. I don't know how well he'd have done in WCW, just since Rey in his prime was pretty difficult to shine in comparison to, but WCW did have more Spanish-speaking wrestlers, probably, so maybe he'd have had an easier time.

Him only being 36 is seriously mind blowing.

He didn't want to learn English iirc. I think that was a factor in them forgetting about him. The dude had tights that said "No Destiny" on them. I wonder if someone clued him in on what that meant. I always took it to mean that he was firmly in the free-will camp.

I liked him in Smackdown or Smackdown 2 because of his tights and the Rios Driver.

It would have been a fantastic gimmick for him to come out with different ridiculous things on his pants every week that he didn't know about. Like the reverse version of people that have those japanese tattoos that they just sorta take someone's word for as far as what it says. Essa Rios: "So what does 'POOPYPANTS FUNTIME' mean?" Vince: "It means you are a great fighter." Essa Rios: "Ah I see, well I'll wear these tonight."

So I googled my favourite backstage bit with Essa and found a thread on these boards from 2006...the exact same topic. So I'll just quote Stu on the matter My fondest backstage memory of Essa Rios involved Kurt Angle (can't go without mentioning him in any thread these days). Angle was backstage looking for his shirt when Essa Rios came in. He started speaking Spanish, and Angle thought he was drunk: "Essa Rios, you sound drunk. Did you sell my shirt and use the money to buy tequila?" It was something like that, but Angle spoke in such a way that you had to think he was serious in his accusation. Another moment involving the two was during the entire who ran over Steve Austin angle when everyone was in the ring and passing the blame, which eventually came on Angle: Angle: "Why does it have to be me? Why can't it be Essa Rios?" Essa Rios: says something in Spanish. Angle: "He said 'I ran over Steve Austin."

He was really fun to use when playing No Mercy. He had his own special moonsault that was super-high. Came here to post exactly this.

He was a bit of a spot monkey, but I liked him. He brought us Lita as everyone said.. but seriously, he was good for what he was. Should have had a longer LHW Title run. I remember him being like 19 when he was used as Aguila pre-Essa. So no wonder it feels like hes been around forever and hes only 36

I think he was very underrated and I don't think the "not wanting to learn English" thing should have been as much of a problem seen as he had a cool look and could work a good match regardless. I mean he was above and beyond Sin Cara Uno, he had the Lita factor, they should have groomed him to greatness because at 18 - 19 if taken under the right WWF wing he could have gotten much much further than he did.

He came into WWE during the Attitude Era where mic skills and crowd response dictated your push not wrestling abilities. Can't speak English, no serious push. Same thing happened Sin Cara Original. When Americans and Canadians go to Mexico, they learn Spanish to the point they are fluent. No one is asking for Shakespearean English but something other than Si or por que.

I remember thinking he was amazing when I was younger but watching his matches back recently I didn't really enjoy them, he had a couple if flashy high flying moves but the rest of the match just wasn't very good in any of them.

When he redebuted as Essa Rios and hit the moonsault on Gillberg, then Lita did the same thing - his thunder was instantly stolen I think.
Did enjoy his work though.
