I loved cage matches in WWF when it was victory by escape only and you had Big Blue which looked monstrous compared to a few panels of chain-link fencing (and which allowed for better camera work from the floor or even through the bars.) That said, I think the current roster doesn't really know how to work such matches effectively anymore and that everything basic that can be done in a steel cage match has been done.
It would take wrestlers with a great deal more skill in improvisation and in putting together a match to make it work than anyone currently on the WWE roster. Moreover, it would require a revamping in the enforcement of wrestling's rules and regulations in order to restore the context in which cage matches thrived - they hold no meaning in an environment when the average wrestling match doesn't observe any consistent rules and tolerates blatant rule-breaking as irrelevant to the story of the match.

I'm not a big fan of the door either. It's only their for shenanigans and nothing else. I also don't like being able to win by pinfall. Kind of kills the entire point of trying to get out of the cage when you can just pin someone like a normal match.

I enjoyed the door more with the classic WWF bar cage because at least when someone got hit with it it looked like they just got murdered.

I hate the "escape the cage" rule entirely. The entire point of a cage match is to keep the guys in the ring, and everyone else out. Running away from the fight shouldn't even be an option. Is the rule a WWE invention? It is really stupid that a grudge match can end with two guys running away. Not to mention

I wouldn't mind the cage door escape if it was designed in a way that if the cage door happens to be unlocked it becomes fair game as an exit strategy. The whole image of referees outside opening the door like some sort of valet is one of the worst things WWE has done. It's supposed to be a brutal match, so why is there a doorman for their convenience?

My least favourite part of cage matches is when the opponent is basically lying flat on their backs in the ring, totally out of it after taking a finisher or power move. Then the other guy basically takes forever to climb the cage. The opponent, who seconds ago was out for the count, then suddenly is miraculously able to get up and sprint up the cage with the greatest of ease to catch them. I mean it just looks stupid. It's like everyone suddenly does the same crap Cena does to sell a countout

Yeah, I hate that spot too. I also hate when a guy gets to the top of the cage quickly but takes an age to swing his legs over the other side. In general I just don't like cage matches to be fair. I'm ok with them but the escape aspect is dumb, just redo NWO 05 and put barb wire on the top of the cage to stop escape and keep the door barred and make it pinfall

Cage matches are just awful regardless of rules. They are restrictive and boring.
At least the blue bars looked painful. I see kids run into chain link fence at school with no pain. It is silly.
