Another JCP story...someone accidentally slammed Bubba's hand in the car door and he did nothing...until him and Jim Cornette were alone, then he started whimpering in pain. He told Cornette, "I couldn't sell it, there were fans around!"

Two things about Bossman (actually three things):
1. 'Dat Theme Song 2. One of his rarely remembered comedic moments: When he came down the ramp in a child's police car....how that thing could hold him was astonishing. 3. From what I've heard, he was one of the nicest wrestlers and always was willing to do charity work when necessary.

He also had great chemistry with Arsenio Hall, it was awesome when Arsenio ran from the set when Bossman got mad.

Foley told a story in his book about how before a house show match against Bossman somewhere, he mentioned going to the local theme park and riding all the roller coasters, and how Bossman was riding the kiddy "Scooby Doo" ride. Rather than no-sell it, Bossman said, "HEY! I HAD A MESSED UP STOMACH, THAT RIDE WAS ROUGH!" It always cracked me up.

Bossman's weird for me, because I dunno how much I liked him when he was wrestling... especially as Big Bubba, I actually found him kinda dull.
But in retrospect, and watching those matches now? Dude was great at the little stuff, super athletic, and surprisingly hilarious. He's the one guy I most want in the HOF.

I wonder if it was the King's Dominion theme park, where WWF actually had a house show in mid 1999. It was an awful choice for venue because the ring was on the theater which seemed to be about 10-20 feet above the non-ringside audience. What I also remember about the show was seeing some of the wrestlers interact with fans in an area behind the arena. Bossman was with a group of kids at the time and seemed like a good guy.

I love the story Ric Flair recently told about him on his podcast, about how Bossman (then Bubba) was irritated with Ronnie Garvin for working so snug with him, so Flair told him to just hit him in the mouth. I lol'd hard. Flair impersonating Bossman's high pitched voice is what made it. "Thanks Thanks that worked". I was surprised to hear Bischoff put him over so much, saying how much he liked Ray. You would think that he would've actually gave him more of a push if he thought so highly of him instead of booking him at a lower midcard level other then the first year in which he just jobbed to Vader all the time. Other then a surprising clean win over Sting on PPV, Bossman really did nothing there. Another story I liked from the Flair podcast is the scaffold one with him not being able to catch Cornette. "I'm sorry Jimmy, you fell so fast". I think one of the problems with Ray was that he was really known for the Big Bossman gimmick. He just fit that role so perfectly. Sometimes other wrestlers called him "Bossman" in WCW when he was playing Big Bubba or some other character, just because that was him. WCW pushed him hard as "The Boss" but when WWE threatened them with a lawsuit, they had to take Ray in a different direction. They tried several things but they just didn't click. Guardian Angel was lame. Big Bubba Rogers worked for a bodyguard character, similar to Mr. Hughes, but didn't really work as a competitive wrestler. Then, it's like they gave up trying to fit him into gimmicks and just let him work under his real name. He got a little push but again, it didn't click. To me, Ray is a guy who was made by a gimmick but similarly cursed by the same gimmick. It would be like if WCW signed Undertaker and then was unable to continue to push him as the dark character that made him successful in the first place.

Never an unkind word, always super nice around kids so they wouldn't be intimidated by his size, and just really nice, personable, great to talk to. That makes me happy.

(seriously but Sid isn't in the HoF yet? That's nuts.)

Royal Rumble 2000. Rikishi has cleared the ring in th the Rumble match. Bossman saunters out, wanders around the ring, bad mouths Rikishi a bit, gets up on the apron, about to get in, drops back to the floor, wanders about some more, mouths off a bit more, gets up again, fakes as far as getting a leg in the ring, drops down again, flips Rikishi off, wearing the biggest unimpressed smirk. Dude just "heels around" for two minutes until the next participant comes out. Gets massive heat and hasn't even broken a sweat. Bossman understood good heeling.

Bossman might have been the MVP of that Rumble imo. Got a lot of ring time and made the most of it as he did a great job in his role of being a sneaky heel with him avoiding Rikishi and sneakily eliminating people. Made it more satisfying when Rock spit punched him out. Another spot with him I liked is when after Chyna eliminates Jericho with a suplex from the apron and starts talking crap while still standing on the apron only for Bossman to walk by and just nonchalantly bump her off with an elbow before raising his arms in triumph. Always makes me laugh for some reason.

I much preferred WWF first run Bossman but his second run as a heel had some famous moments and feuds.

The cage match with Hogan with that old school blue cage. Remember watching that match as a kid and being really invested in it. And Hogan superplexing Bossman from the top of the damn cage! 300 lb guys aren't supposed to do that but the big hoss and the Musclehead Who Supposedly Couldn't Work did.

Hogan suplexing him off the top of the cage was epic! Bret can brag about him and Owens cage match all he wants but hogan and boss man did it first! Believe that was Saturday Night Main Event. I was into that one too, and I was anti-WWF as a kid. My cousin and I fought over NWA/WWF a lot. They did that match originally on the house shows just prior to Wrestlemania V. Those matches at MSG and Boston Garden aired on MSG Network and NESN (Tony Schiavone's WWF debut was calling those house shows). They went over so well, Vince got Hulk and Bossman to repeat the match on SNME.

Cornette once told a funny story, that in the scaffold match between the Road Warriors and The Midnight Express, Big Bubba Rogers (Bossman) was supposed to catch him, but the lights blinded him and he missed Cornette, who f***ed up both of his knees. I loved how Cornette said after the fall, he was trying to talk, but couldn't due to the pain in his knees and from cracking his head on Bubba's knee, and Bubba said "Man, you're selling this great!" Then Cornette tried to say "I'm shooting! I'm shooting!" but Bubba heard it as "I'm shitting! I'm shitting!" thus convincing him further that he was selling. Finally, Cornette says "Bubba, pick my ass up!" Bubba then realizes Cornette is messed up and says "Jimmy, you're hurt!"

The infamous moment where The Big Boss Man beat the crap out of Hogan, with a night stick, while he was handcuffed to the guard rail on The Brother Love Show. My first actually shock moment as a child, just unreal and shot Bossman straight into the main event stratosphere for the time being.

Since I lived most of my life in the county right next to Cobb County, I was fortunate enough to meet him several times over the course of my life. He was ALWAYS a class act. Never an unkind word, always super nice around kids so they wouldn't be intimidated by his size, and just really nice, personable, great to talk to. To my knowlege, he's one of those guys that nobody in the business had a bad word to say about
