Another Kickstarter update from Joel: he and the new cast will be touring America this coming October and November riffing two movies, THE BRAIN and DEATHSTALKER. I really hope that's the 1988 Canadian film titled The Brain, and not one of the other movies with that name. The Kickstarter page says "The Brain, a Canadian sci-fi suburban nightmare" so I presume it's what you're hoping for (for a good reason, I hope?)

I'm hoping they'll take some of the feedback from the first run back and build off of it. Like, I think probably the biggest issue was they riffed a bit too much and didn't let jokes breathe. The riffs themselves tended to be fine, it just crowded the humor and made the episodes a little densely packed.

They seemed to improve as time went on though, like how the original had the inverse.

I feel like some episodes flowed better than others this season, depending on the material. The host segments I thought were fun, but I mean, Felicia Day is an easy sell for me, so...

A couple of the main cast/crew have gone on record recently that they have purposely avoided all reviews, critiques and online comments about the show.

Makes sense, hope they come to some of the same conclusions, then.

If you watch the pre-Comedy Central ones, the riffs are really sparse. The riffs in the pre-CC era were ad-libbed and not pre-planned. They were making them up as they went. But even the CC eps didn't start off perfect. Season one suuuuucks in regards to the riffing and is almost as bad as the KTMA stuff. They started getting better in season 2, but I really feel they didn't hit their stride until the very end of it with the two Godzilla films. After that, they were on track.

Supposedly, that's why Josh Weinstein left the show. He liked that most of the show was improvised. When the show became more scripted (live segments and riffs alike) he said it wasn't fun anymore and left.

I know Rifftrax already covered it, but I'd LOVE to see the new MST3K crew do The Apple, as I've just discovered that movie, and it is hilariously awful.

I know it's trickier with the switch to widescreen, but I would love if they somehow managed to bring shorts back in for this coming season.

Joel could probably do some visual gag stuff with the empty space made by the shorts' aspect ratio. Personally I hope if they can't do a short here and there in the newer seasons, because of time constraints, that maybe they make an episode of just shorts. I recently saw one on military truck drive shafts (In the 40s or 50s) that was begging to be riffed.

Ugh, such a ridiculous position with these flicks; without a platform like MST most of them would just fade into obscurity, getting riffed means they at least get a platform and an introduction to an audience that might come to appreciate them as Z-grade cheese on their own. Like, I can understand Toho not being big on the Godzilla riffs, as it's a big enough franchise that they don't need the riffed versions to ensure people knowing of or buying them, but outside of them there's really no reason to do something that amounts to just sitting on those films.
