Why is this illegal on a pin attempt?
Are you not allowed to grab someone's ring attire for leverage at other times? Are wrestlers barred from grabbing someone's boot or shirt?
Never understood this. Can someone give me the kayfabe justifaction for this rule (which, I realize, has been around forever)?

I don't think you are allowed in other moves, it's just lenient. Think how a top rope move is technically illegal but they allow it, along with the 619 etc, but they allow it.

Yeah, but if you grab someone by the back of their shirt/top/singlet and throw them out of the ring, the ref doesn't refuse to count the opponent out because you gained an illegal advantage in throwing him out. Nor do they "warn" the guy who does it.

Too much booty is bad for you.

Maybe because it leads directly to the finish? Not sure though.

I've always been curious as to how it secures the pinfall. Someone grabbing the back of your trunks would be irritating, maybe even painful but shouldnt restrict movement of the legs and prevent a kickout.

I assume it's a rule that's leftover from the days when wrestlers only wore tiny trunks. It was just never updated when other forms of attire became more common.
Grabbing IRS' tie should have been double illegal as it was both grabbing attire and a choke.
