I remember Charles Wright, aka The Godfather once saying he'd been talking with WCW, but they decided to resign Vincent/Virgil instead. If he had made that jump, I could totally have seen him being a kickass tag team with Norton.

I've been going through the early Nitro's on the network and he seems like someone that could've gone further if given a push as a bully heel which seemed to be a role he was best suited for. Unfortunately it seemed like they didn't know if they wanted him to be a face or a heel as he was in this weird tweener role where he got into a confrontation with Savage and was bullying the commentators but then was in a mini feud with the Shark who was in the heel Dungeon of Doom. I think if they would've just kept him heel and pushed him more he maybe could've been something although I think his lack of charisma might have prevented him from getting too far. Being in a tag team seemed to be a better role for him, where he could be with a more charismatic partner while he could just be the no nonsense tough guy of the team. Like other big guys who were lacking in the personality department, Japan was a better fit for him. I too liked the Fire and Ice team with Ice Train and wish they would've lasted longer then a couple months. They were both almost an exact match size wise but at the same time had contrasting personalities. I also liked the storyline with them deciding to form a team after wrestling each other to draws and earning respect for each other. Apparently they didn't get along well for real which is probably why their team was short lived, as Norton buried Ice Train when asked about him in his shoot interview. The whole tweener thing was normal in WCW at that time. This was right after Luger came back and joined the Dungeon of Doom, but continued to be friends with Sting, much to the dismay of Sting's other friends Hogan and Savage. Luger would run out and save Sting from the Horsemen, then Sting could come out and save Luger from his own stable mates. Hogan started wearing black and ended up having a mini-feud with Sting over misplaced loyalties. It worked great with established characters, but yeah I think Norton probably would have benefited from being used a little more consistently in the beginning. Yeah that's true although I actually kind of dug the main event conspiracy storyline with everyone being paranoid and Luger in his tweener role with Hogan questioning every week "What I wanna know is where Luger's coming from brother!". I'm in December now and they're now teasing a Sting heel turn too since he keeps coming to Luger's defense. It's very intriguing stuff but I think like usual with WCW they didn't really know what the conclusion was, so all the TV time they spent on it ended up being pointless as Luger just quietly settled into being a full fledged face while Sting just stayed the same until he went emo and became crow Sting in a completely different storyline as the NWO was heavily involved by that point. With a midcard guy like Norton, who was new and needed stability, it did more harm then good though. Sgt. Craig Pittman was another guy tweener guy around this time who they seemed like they didn't have a clue what to do with as he would change alignments week to week.

I'm back to this forum for the first time in years...
I've always been a big Scott Norton fan. Big, strong, and vicious, he made you think he could beat up anyone. He was my 2nd favorite nWo guy, after Savage, when I started watching WCW again in '97. I loved his flapjack stuff in AWA too.

Did Norton and Vader ever hook it up in Japan? That would have been a sight to see. Back in NJPW 1991 they did & they also teamed with Bam Bam Bigelow at NJPW G1 Climax (August 11, '91) Hopefully there is some video somewhere.

If you have New Japan World, there are two Vader v. Norton matches on there from 1991.

Never saw much outside of his WCW stuff but he's definitely an underrated favorite of mine. Wicked shoulder breaker and powerbomb and his mean and stoic attitude made a nice contrast to Bagwell being an utter goof. Kinda sad he never got a run with the title.

He did get two runs as IWGP Heavyweight Champion. His first run was in 1998 while he was still going back and forth between WCW and New Japan. I don't remember if he ever had the belt with him in WCW, but I'm pretty sure he appeared in WCW while he was still IWGP Heavyweight Champion.

I should really look up some of his work in Japan.

He might have had the belt with him once, then NJPW sent a cease-and-desist to WCW make him stop. Not positive.
I remember his teaming with Nord in the AWA. They were fun to watch just wrecking guys.

Scott was always a decent big man and always cracked me up when they'd mention his background in "arm wrestling".
There's a cool story in Jericho's first book about Scott Hall bullying Chris and Scott Norton sticking up for him
Edit: here it is

I don't know why Vince didn't have interest in bringing him in anytime between 1995-2001. He fits the "hoss" mentality down to a tee.
Putting him in the IC scene anytime between 1995 and 2001 would give it instant credibility.

I liked Fire & Ice more than someone should. Then I didn't like Norton until I made an effort based on him being so great in THQ games.
I'm just an Ice Train guy, I s'pose.

Putting him in the IC scene anytime between 1995 and 2001 would give it instant credibility. Both NJPW and WCW were very hot for most of that time period. I'm sure Norton was making way more money than someone in the IC title scene. Remember, WWE didn't always have 100x the resources of every other wrestling promotion combined.
