So, this was like, uh, SNK's response to Street Fighter 3. Came out around the same time 3rd Strike did, and used a similar casting gimmick of "here's one or two guys you know and love, flanked by a shit load of newbies who may be related to other guys you know and love."
So, for instance, Taekwondo master Kim Kaphwan is out, replaced by his douchebag sons Kim Dong-hwan and Kim Jae-hoon. But, the Lone Wolf Terry Bogard is still in the fray.
(Dong is kinda cool, admittedly.)
This game is very pretty, but not at all noob-friendly, no. Your inputs have to be on-point if you're going to survive. Andy Bogard's little bastard ninja son trainee is really, really, really annoying to fight, though to be fair, child characters are almost always a pain in fighting games.
Who else has played this?

This is legit one of my favorite 2D fighters ever made. I used to be a pretty good Jae Hoon player back when I played this game all the time. And I liked Butt and Jenet a lot, too. Terry was also pretty strong. It had some fun boss characters like Grant and Kain, too.
Kevin was supposed to be the god-tier in this game but I could never get the hang of him.

Who else has played this? I have. I owned it when I had a Dreamcast, and your description of the game is spot-on. It IS very Street Fighter III-ish. SNK even bumped up the number of frames of animation, seemingly in an attempt to copy what Capcom did. That's not a knock on SNK, though; the game is superb. What's a Garou, though? Some kind of warewolf?

I've wanted this game for a long time, since it's one of a few fighting games with Bonne Jenet in it. I'm still not sure if this game is available in the U.S. outside of the Dreamcast version. It was released digitally, but idk if the digital version made it here.

I messed around with this at a local arcade a few times and I usually mained Rock (I think I'm one of the few Americans who prefers him to Geese) and Jenet.

Garou was the shit. And yes it was SNK's Street Fighter III. And as a testament to this game, it took Capcom 3 tries for Third Strike but SNK only took one for Garou.

Great game. One of my DC treasures...... that my jobber roommate somehow lost when we moved. I payed like seventy bucks for that, meng. Way to take care of your brother.

"Garou" is also a Japanese word meaning "hungry wolf." In kanji, it's 餓狼.
Probably a cognate from French but it is a Japanese word.
